I picked up this book after reading the Nebula award-winning novelette "Two Hearts," which is really a sequel to The Last Unicorn. Had I not read "Two Hearts," I would have passed on this book, based on the title alone. Unicorns - along with rainbows and ponies - are for little girls. Right? If not for "Two Hearts," I would have never purchased The Last Unicorn, and I would have missed out on one of the most enchanting and beautifully written books I have ever read. With a little over two hundred pages, this book is not long, but it's not a children's book - not really - and it's not an especially easy read. The writing is thick with metaphor and simile. Where another book might present you with an original figure of speech here or a new turn of phrase there, and you might smile at the cleverness, The Last Unicorn turns up ten on every page. This book will sparkle in your mind long after you set it down. The story is a fairy tale. Not a retelling, not a twist on a story we all know, but a unique and original story. The world and the characters are wonderfully drawn, their dilemmas are real, and the story is by turns both humorous and profound. This book has achieved the status of a fantasy classic, and very deservedly so. If you count yourself a fan of the fantasy genre, and haven't read this book, then you should.

I first want to talk about the cover. Doesn't the person on it remind you of Avatar? And that circle that says "Cirque du Freak" on it? Total waste. Anyway, omg. OMG! OOOOOOOHHHHHH EEEMMMMMMM GEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! Didn't you just want to, like, brutally murder Steve at the end of the book!?!?!?! I was just screaming at the book and walking around saying 'oh my gawd'. Steve is such a douche-bag! He's so scummy you just love to hate him. And I mean full on hate. So from now on, I am going to refer to him as Mr. Douche-bag. So Mr. Douche-bag here kills Shancus, who by the way, was an innocent child and had no place in this war. I mean, really? Mr. Douche-bag, are you that evil? That you would kill a child!?!?!?! Not to mention you have a son?!?! Who you had with Annie! Darren's sister!!!! Which by the way makes you a bigger douche bag cause you USED her and had a child with her!!!! And I don't even want to think that you had sex with poor, sweet, little Annie, you heartless monster. What the Bieber is wrong with you? There's also the fact that Mr. Douche-bag here was about to make Darren kill his own nephew! Who by the way is Steve's son! I seriously just want Steve to die. Die and never come back. Die and stay dead. And maybe even perish a lot ofter he passes. I hate you Mr. Douche-bag and I'll always will. Darius.... I knew there was something up with him... But I think he'll get better... Blah. Bloh. Bleh. This book was soooo epic and frustrating at he same time! GAHHH! Can't wait for the next one!
