I had high hopes for this book, and remember the buzz around it before I left NYC. But once I finally read it, I thought it was just another chick lit novel not in the same category as a Marian Keyes or even Jennifer Weiner.
As much as I love Alain de Botton, this was not one of my favorites. 'How Proust Can Change Your Life' had it's moments, certainly, but overall, so-so. The scene recounting the interactions between Proust and James Joyce, however, was classic.
I kept picking this up in bookstores and putting it back down. Rather foolish of me. This book is laugh out loud funny without sacrificing the seriousness of the subject matter.

This is a book of essays on fashion written over a period of fifteen years and published in a variety of magazines, from Vogue to The Atlantic. The writing is descriptive and amusing, if somewhat dated (she speaks of Isaac Mizrahi being out of a job), and they paint a great picture of fashion in the 80's an 90's with some very true observations about how fashion affects culture.
This book was really an eye-opener for me. It makes you think what a different life there could be.
