Wow! An intense, long read, but well-written, and very intriguing. It was definitely slower paced than today's typical literature, and telling the story from looking back on events rather than in the midst of them took away from the suspense. If it were re-written today, it would make for a great thriller. However, I really loved how the book was written in narratives. Seeing if from the perspectives of several different people of differing opinions and views (and egos) was really a nice touch to a mysterious story. The twists and turns were well-planned, and although I saw the "conspiracy" coming, I don't think most people would suspect the details of it. I didn't figure out Sir Percival's secret until Walter did, and the secret itself was fascinating, especially since he pulled it off for so long. Other than Mrs. Catherick, Marian had to be my favorite character. She really had courage, fortitude, and foresight. However, I wasn't a huge fan of her half-sister, Laura who demonstrated all the weaknesses ever chalked up to women. The representation of women as the weaker sex (with the exception of Marian, and even her at times) was a huge bother and annoyance as I read, which is why I can't give this lovely book five stars. Every single woman, with the exception of the two mentioned above, was weak-minded, weak-hearted, or just plain dumb. With all the "Gave her time to recover"s peppering the book, the length of it could have been cut in half had they just gotten on with it! Mrs. Catherick's part was small, but she made a lasting impression. I particularly enjoyed her character and the Count when it came to ego and their view of the world. Overall impression: Well-worth the time it took to read even with my particular annoyances. There were some small violences but nothing overt (this was written in the late 1800's afterall), no profanity, and no sex. Good read!

confusing in some parts but overall a good book.
Sansom does an excellent job here of capturing the feelings of dislocation and loss of identity that emerge from war and the constant upheaval conflict imposes even on those who try to dissociate themselves from it.
Awesome! Cant wait to check out the movie. This author rocks. Cant wait for the next one.
On the history of science. The book is an interesting look at the history surrounding some of the major scientific discoveries of our time. How the age, mass of the earth was discovered. The story of the first dinosaur bones discovered. The history of the discovery of ancient humans. Etc.

I thought the book was well written. The author did an amazing job in keeping the same voice as Mark Tawin's characters. My main issue with the book is the complete disgust I had for the main character. I found it really hard to care what happened at to him. All I thought when I was reading was what is the next self-serving horrible thing will he do? How will he ruin someone else's life? The fact that he died at the end did not provide any satisfaction. He used the poor laundress woman and brought back to her all those memories of that night her family was destroyed and he got off so easy. I was just disgusted through the whole novel.

A study of how "subconscious" memories of past traumatic events can conflict with conscious memories. Scarf used the details of actual individuals — herself and four or five women she interviewed over a period of months or years — to illustrate how past traumas could interfere with current coping skills and happiness. This examination led her to explore body-oriented therapeutic methods which appeared in the 1990s. Reading this book had me revisiting early-childhood memories of my own, and wondering if they impact my functioning today. I learned of this one from an interview with the author on KUOW's The Beat.

Clearly a twisted book by a twisted author. But very much an anti-drug book despite some who think it promoted drugs. After reading about the lives of these addicts, I'm not sure who'd think heroin was a good idea. Also, the book spends a bit more time on AIDS than the movie does. There is difficulty in that it is written in a phonetic Scottish dialect, which takes some getting used to and persistence. But what great characters and an interesting look at life in Scotland in the 90s...
