I really wanted to like this book, but it was not to be. It isn't so much a mystery as an essay on the gnostics, and the information isn't terribly new. Pretty much the gnostic point of view. The writing is uneven, as well. Parts were actually intersting, but on the whole I can't recommend it.

This is a book every American should read! It will open your mind and change your perception of what's going on over there in the Middle East. I have to say the writing is not primo. Sounds like a journalist trying to turn novelist. Convoluted sentence structure and too much unnecessary detail. But the story is wonderful -- not to be missed! 9/14/2010 - Reading for the second time for Spiritual Book Club
Got old toward the end. Messed up on the highest level.

This book was not written by the original author of the Dune series but rather by his son. The book is meant to tell the story of the time in between the first and second books of the Dune Chronicles. Brian Herbert's writing style was much more modern than his father's, which I suppose makes sense. This had its benefits because it was more explanatory and read more like other modern novels I have enjoyed. But it also took something away from the book. The Dune Chronicles were written as though the person reading it was a member of the society and knew the culture. It did not spoon-feed you background information, giving the story a feeling of disconnect from the modern world, which gives the reader more of a sense of peeking into a world he does not entirely understand.
Really good. I enjoyed every second of it. I found it very absorbing & I was able to lose myself in the story. The writing style was fabulous - I could almost hear Richard recounting the story to me & the characters were 100% real to me. His episodes with Daffy and the issues of insanity were particularly interesting & I enjoyed the message of "be careful what you wish for". A comment that Richard made about whether writing a diary aids or hinders memory has struck me, although I'm not sure which I would agree with. One possible problem I had with the book is the final scene in at the beach, which almost turned into a farcical zombie movie - but at the same time, I can see the links with the rest of the novel, the message it portrayed & the characters themselves. I would definitely recommend this book.

In Shawn Lane’s Accidentally His, the phrase meeting by accident is literal. Kirk Matheson travels to work by bus two to three times a week in an effort to stretch out the life of his car. Kirk has a crush on a nerdy fellow passenger, Elijah Cartwright, but it takes a Mustang slamming into the side of the bus to bring them together. The relationship between Kirk and Elijah made for a pleasant enough read, but Accidentally His did not resonate with me as much as the author's other works. My main gripes would be that Kirk's character didn't seem nearly as well developed as Elijah's, and then there was the appearance of Harry. Harry was just plain creepy!
I do not even have enough room to tell all that I learned from this book. However, if you are one that does not get too freaked out by the bad things of the world then this book might just grab you. I loved it, I just think it is great to be able to read an inseders perspective on what took place.
