L. Jon Wertheim's great account of personalities in professional women's tennis in the early late 90's/early 00's.
I found this on a bookshelf about a year ago at my last job and took it home. A wonderful collection of stories - I'm so glad I randomly picked it up.
Lovely Shadows is the story of Jessa Grace, a girl who doesn't believe in anything that can't be rationally explained, despite being the granddaughter of a minister. That is, until a strange shadow starts following her everywhere she goes. She tries to ignore it but it doesn't go away so finally she confronts it and learns it is actually the ghost of Aidan Summers. Aidan was killed in a car accident but since he can't cross over to the other side, he believes he was murdered. With Aidan's help, Jessa sets out to find out who killed Aidan and why. In the process, she falls in love with the spirit. A pickle in itself, made more difficult by the fact Jessa already has a boyfriend she is in love with and planning to spend the rest of her life with. I started reading Kendra's novel at 10:30 last night and would have stayed up all night to finish had my eyes not started drooping closed. Instead, I finished this morning. Suffice it to say the story grabbed me from page one and didn't let go. I was fascinated and couldn't wait to find out what would happen next. Lovely Shadows is a real page-turner! I became emotionally invested in the characters. They truly feel like real people. In fact, I wonder what they are doing now... My only problems with the book were editing errors: words left out or typos. No problems with the story -- it unfolded at a nice pace, drawing the reader in. With a bit more editing and tightening of the story, I believe this has the potential to be a best-seller. I loved it that much. Kudos to Kendra! BUY THIS BOOK PEOPLE! You will not be disappointed.

A dark and morally ambiguous story of government deception, corruption, societal collapse and the important part people play as catalysts for change, be their actions extreme, or as simple as taking an active part in the society and government around them (perhaps more of a moral to the story). I found the comic art to fit the story well, as has been mentioned in other reviews. You can see the change that taking a few years between the beginning and end of the project can cause, in his writing and artwork. I also appreciated his continuous references to literary works, and will be taking some cues from the book, and putting them in my bookshelf soon. All in all, good stuff.

A quick, but challenging read, C.S. Lewis' Abolition of Man begins as a critique of a particular school text book, then expands to encompass many of the 20th century's assumptions about morality. While parts of the book are very rooted in 20th century England, there is still a lot that can be applied to our 21st century world. Lewis spends most of the book arguing against the modern tendency to discard traditional morality in favor of "instinct." He instead suggests that any belief system that is not grounded in "the Tao" - a first principles set which constitutes the basic morality common to all religious faiths. It would seem that this argument between those that use a basic morality to judge actions and those who do not hold to any sort of morality is still going on, making Lewis' treatise an interesting read.

Kurt VOnnegut's and Salman Rushdie's godfather from the 1790s. If you liked the movie you actually will find the spirit of it (as well as more of the motifs from the movie than you might expect) in the novel.
I really liked this book, although to be 100% honest, I was somewhat confused at the end and had to do some google searches to determine if I had understood it correctly. There are several intersecting stories in the book, so it requires very close reading to fully appreciate the story. Probably worth reading a second time to pick up the missing pieces.

This book was a little childish to me.
