I loved this book. Because he teaches deep Gospel doctrine in the context of different sins in the lives of people it seems to stick. For example, I don't think I will get expiation mixed up with propitiation as a result of reading this because I am connecting those doctrines to a story now.

I am glad I read this book, because, despite the genial and almost too cheerful attitude of the writer, there is NO WAY I would retire to Mexico. I'd rather just keep working.

Funny stuff! If you speak a little French, or have spent a little time in Paris, you can totally relate to parts of this book. Kind of like a Bill Bryson who sleeps around a lot more....

It's one of those science fiction books that challeneges you. It's not the latest Jedi vs. Sith epic.. it's a story about the next phase in the evolution of human beings. I will say no more because you must evolve with the book while reading it.

Heck of a long book, I had to put it down midway to read some other things. I hadn't reread the previous volume, but he does a good job of recapping. Long digressions and side trips abound, but with interesting outcomes. We get to see some of the episodes that made Kvothe famous. Good worldbuilding and good foreshadowing. I don't really like the main character that much, although he is easy to read about. A really neat villain with the Cthaerh (sp?). The current day stuff/framing story is still interesting (I do like the character of Chronicler).

I am sorry to say that I did not read the first book in the trilogy prior to this one. However the second book can be read as a stand alone as Litfin does a good job of weaving enough information from the first book into this story line through flashback, comments, etc. The concept of a world where the Bible has been lost is intriguing. However I feel the characters can be a bit over dramatic, predictable and in some ways not human enough. Despite the character development weaknesses, the story is engaging. Their feeling of frustration in not knowing the rest of the story of God comes off quite well. I like that fact that through certain characters Litfin shows the Love that God has for all people no matter who they are. The characters on the side of evil are just that what they are supposed to be evil. Overall it was an enjoyable read and I look forward to reading the first and 3rd books in the trilogy.

This was my first introduction to kanji as a beginner student in 1998/1999 and it was an indispensable learning tool. It gave me a great foundation in the language and was structured well in that the grammar used in each section ramped up slowly as the units went on, complementing what I was studying with my teacher. An excellent primer on kanji -- there is no other study text I would recommend.
