This book was written as a serial - published daily in The Scotsman. Because of that it has a few unique features. It's not fast paced. Things happen in short snippets. I liked it, but wasn't overwhelmingly thrilled by it. McCall Smith's writing style is consistent, and I like that.

its a typical john grisham book...law, courtroom, etc, except it's nonfiction. thats what makes it so good.

I'm trying to read this on cd, but every time I turn it on in my car I can't help but feel that the narrator, a 60-year-old Italian man, is sitting in my back seat, like he let himself in and is wondering when I'm going to get him his cappuccino. I'm new to this whole books-on-tape thing, so we'll see if I can get through it. Skipped to the end - and it ended just as I thought it would.

What I learned from these stories is that people are soooo bad, and terribly interesting!
A fairly straight forward attempt at hard-boiled ends up being a bit soft-boiled. It's a quick read and a peek at the underside of America's kink, or maybe the mainstream, if you believe the book.
Spellbinding. I couldn't put it down. And I had notes trying to figure it out.
