Very good. This edition was lacking. Literally. It was lacking much of the original text, and some parts really felt like they were a bit thin. Probably not Augustine's fault.

I totally loved this book. Tighe, a tiger shifter, is also a Feral Warrior defending the human race against daemons. All of the Feral Warriors were cloned by the evil witch Zaphene and every one of them was killed except Tighe's double who is now on a rampage killing humans for power. Tighe has the ability to see what the clone is doing through the clone's eyes. When FBI agent Delaney Randall starts having visions of the serial killer's next crime, Tighe is able to see the visions as well. Tighe is the spitting image of his clone (the serial killer) so when Delaney sees Tighe, she absolutely freaks out. When Tighe is unable to wipe her mind, he has to kidnap her to protect the warriors. The hunt for the clone is intense, the romance is sweet and the sex is hot. Honestly what more could you ask for in a romance.

I actually name dropped this book in one of my law school admission essays, it intrigued me so much. Ok. So the telegraph, boring, right? I thought so too, until I realized what a milestone it was for the people in the 1800's. Most people didn't really know what it was or how it even worked. Some folks actually thought messages weren't sent electronically, but through high powered pistons that pumped air and shot folded-up pieces of paper through a telegraph wire over hundreds of miles. And of course there was a new class of criminals who took advantage of the new technology---all of the parallels sounds exactly like the problems experienced in today's world with the advent of the Internet(i can still hear my grandma echoing "But how does the letter get INSIDE the computer?") It was an interesting read, and I think another step of getting inside the head of ordinary people in the 19th century, which is one of my passions in life. I think most of the world look at the everyday denizens of the past as boring, stark black-and-white characters. The kinda people who didn't make love or play with dogs or laugh at the tripping of clumsy people. I love it.

Gideon gets there in time to pull the man from the wreckage and write down a long string of numbers he rattles off. There's nothing else on him. The hunt is on for the "lost" plans, wherever the scientist hid them, the meaning of the list of numbers, and how it all ties together. The CIA is involved and a blues playing Chinese hit man named Nodding Crane is also in the mix.

I went back and forth between 3 and 4 stars for this one but finally decided on 3 for 2 reasons. #1. - I had a hard time getting into it at the beginning and #2. Unlike other books from this author (Daughter of the Forest and Son of the Shadows, etc.) where I soaked in every detail and practically felt as if I were living in the story, in this one I found my self skipping through the details to get to the end. I did enjoy the story though and am excited to read the next books in the trilogy.

Talk about "nothing happens." As a writer, I've heard editors whining about the importance of not only plot points, but many of them. However, I'm 2/3rd's through this and cannot find ANY plot points! The result, a slow, slow read, even if I do like the characters. OK, now I'm at the point where the plot unravels a bit with the narrator and her grandmother, Georgia. You see it coming a mile away, but you're relieved when you get there. Finished it. Geeeesh, did it take forever to get to the inevitable and predictable end? Yes, but I still liked it because of it's take on love.

The Raising was my first book by Laura Kasischke and I must say she made a very good impression on me. The writing was so good, it was enough to make me like this book. Some parts even managed to give me the creeps. (But I guess it's not that hard when you're reading on a bed in a cheap hotel at 3 o'clock in the morning.) The academic world of Godwin Honors Hall was well built and the characters were charming and easy to connect with. My favourite one was Perry, I found his inner restlessness sad and sweet at the same time. On the other side, Nicole and Josie were two of the most irritating characters I've read of lately and I'm sure I won't miss them at all. The story was one of the most intriguing and well-thought I've ever read, everything perfectly fit together and it took me a while to understand that, because there were so many questions, so many dead ends, so many twists that it was hard to keep up with the pace. The end was a bit rushed and, well, not properly an end, since it didn't say anything about the mystery, but it was nice to see how the characters' lives had gone on after all their tragedies (which were all caused by a sorority. Which, if you think about it, is creepy. And sad.) I recommend this book to the fans of mystery, in particular the ones set in colleges, and to the lovers of the world of the dead and the undead - though not in the supernatural way.
