This incredibly fun sci fi novel takes the protagonist from the troubador planet to the Protestant Work Ethic planet, whose capital is Utilitopia. Has a fast-moving plot, several duels, a romance of sorts, a couple great insults, and some too-facile feminism. Only after I had read it twice did I realize that it was, in fact, the most entertaining defense of Keynsian economics that ever has been or will be written. Downside: a bit dismissive of spirituality and cultural diversity. Warning: if you like this book, don't assume you'll like everything by this author - his themes and quality vary REALLY widely (the thematically icky _Mother of Storms_ and the badly written _Patton's Spaceship_ come to mind).

Loved Ori.
Katniss Everdeen is a hunter, even though hunting is forbidden. Ever since her father died in a mine explosion, and her mother's bout with depression afterwords, it has been up to her to keep food on the table. She lives in District 12, one of the poorest Districts of Panem, in what used to be the United States. Luckily for her, many of the town officials are partial to the meat she brings back as well, and are willing to overlook her methods of procuring it. Then comes the Reaping--the yearly lottery where one boy and one girl, ages 12-18, from each district are chosen to participate in the Hunger Games. The Games are meant to keep the districts in line after a failed rebellion years ago, and remind the people of their helplessness against the Capitol. The chosen youth are put into an arena filled with natural (and unnatural) terrain, where they fight to the death. Last one standing is the victor. Everyone back at home has to watch it all on TV. This year Katniss will be one of the contenders, but it will take much more than her skill with a bow to survive. Thought-provoking, disturbing, and completely mesmerizing. Must get the sequel.

A Po-Mo murder mystery. Gerald is having a big party with many friends and people he doesn't know, when a body of a very "well known" entertainer is found dead on the floor. Craziness occurs in a very relaxed non-chalant manner. It is a very tough read, i mean very tough. Coover never states who says what piece of dialogue, with fifty or so characters in the book, and many around at each situation that is occuring, it takes a lot of effort to decipher who is saying the line. It took me a good two months reading in complete silence to finish this one. However i found it very rewarding to get through. I'll never read another novel like this for the rest of my life. And it was highly entertaining.

Caps for Sale is a glimpse into a daytime affair of a cap seller. The story contains many words, but it also has a bordered illustration on one page of every two pages. The illustrations do not vary much in color choice and the details are simple. Still, the pictures are humorous in the way that they portray the characters and they support the humor of the story by displaying characters' actions (wearing lots of caps).

intellectual, academia-style s&m. lovely.
It was a good story, but very long-winded and bogged with way too much detail.

What a fantastic book! Despite the ominous cover, it was a positive look at human reactions to disasters. It took case studies from September 11, Katrina, fires, plane crashes, etc and went through fear, dread, panic, heroism, and other reactions. The book was facinating, presenting so many intruiging facets of human behavior and brain functions. Once you read some of them, you immediately want to hurry and find someone to tell about it or talk it over with. It got to the point that Michael would ask me at the end of the day what new stories I had to share from it. Anyway, it does make you think about what your reactions would be. Suggestions such as fire drills, actually going down the stairs as soon as you check into your hotel room, and paying attention in the pre-flight drills made me vow to be better about such things. Time and again, in studies of survivors, people who knew not only had a better chance of getting out alive, but could also be a positive force in saving others. I want to be the person who acts in the emergency, not the one who panics or sits stairing at the problem. Infact, yesterday while I was at the temple, I found myself trying to picture how to get out if there was a fire. I almost asked if there were back stairs and where they led. Next time! Read this book for interesting stories and a kick in the pants to be prepared.
This is the second volume of Catton's 2 volume work on Grant during the WBTS. This work builds well on the first volume and has all of it's strengths. Grant's western campaign is very interesting to read about, especially how he applied the command lessons he learned at Donelson. His actions in Tennessee and how he was able to effectively pass command to Sherman in 1864 contain lessons still applicable today. His role with the Army of the Potomac also developed, after some missteps, into a solid command performance. 1864 and 1865 were instructional in how he used the principle of attrition and maneuver to finally defeat the ANV.

Another great book by James Patterson. I had a hard time putting this one down. Even when I was sick, and my eyes felt like someone was in my head trying to scratch them out. This book is one of my favorites of his, right up there with his Alex Cross series.
