This book is heralded as a creepy kid's tale and I suppose there are parts that are a bit shivery but overall it's not exactly going to keep me from turning out the lights at night. I don't think it would have phased me even as a young kid. The characters are interesting but the book is so short that we barely get to know them and they are mostly left as two-dimensional caricatures - something all too common in childrens' lit. The plot is also rather predictable and simplistic though helped along by Gaiman's rich, vivid descriptions. Overall a fast, simple read but not up Gaiman's usual standards.
I pulled this one off of the shelves today for a stroy time. It had been a while since I had read it to a group. I still love it!
It's been quite a while since reading this book but I would still like to comment topically on what I do remember. I picked up this book out of my love for the 1950's television show The Honeymooners. Knowing a good deal about the life of Jackie Gleason, I can tell you that this book (written by his television wife Audrey Meadows) paints a considerably rosy picture of the controversial actor. Notwithstanding, it came from a person who was as close to Jackie as anyone ever was and it was a very good read. For those who are also aficionados of The Honeymooners, I suggest it as a must-read and as an accompaniment to the show itself. Knowing the history of this pioneer of television and the part he played as the father of The Honeymooners is only part of the viewing experience.
Romance: Completely romantic but not in the gushy girly "I will give my life for you" manner. It's a modern funny romance that will make you think aaawww with the requisite amount of romantic tension, chase, mystery and sweet factor. Nothing cringe worthy, a teeny tiny bit fairytale like (the meet cute coincidence) but in a good way. Starts off with Sydney penning a note to a columnist/ journalist after taking exception to an article he has written. There ensues a fair bit of banter between the two. The Journalist tries to engage Sydney in a more personal manner but she evades him. However, soon enough she meets a hot dude randomly in a bar.... Thus a interesting situation occurs. =========================================== =========================================== Characters: Heroine: Sydney: female protagonist is an upbeat, trendy, intelligent, witty mid-20s career girl living in LA. Love the dialogue. Hero: tall, dark handsome hottie, 30ish career dude. He's witty, cool and manly without being a Neanderthal. There is a slight twist (well it's obvious what the twist is - but in a good way- also extremely romantic). Supporting characters - love the supporting characters particularly the neighbour's little boy. ================================================= ================================================= Audience: this is for intelligent, independent career women who want to read a sharp witty but "light" romcom that doesn't involve a fluffy bimbo shopping mad fashion obsessed female, or a poor PA waiting for her boss to fall in love with her. Modern chick lit seriously needs a "shake up" to reflect today's career-wise, educated, street-smart women who want more than to fall in love! This book sure does deliver that with non-nauseating results. However, if you want ultra fluffy chick lit than pass this by. ========================================== Synopsis: When Sydney is asked to work up an advertising pitch to sell the Catholic Church to the unwashed masses, she's distinctly uncomfortable. After all, she's agnostic herself and, despite assistance from easy-on-the-eye-but-obviously-celibate Father Giuliani, she just can't stop blaspheming. But, work apart, things are lathering up nicely for our heroine when the chance throw of a pen brings gorgeous Jake into the frame. And then it's a downhill path to fist-date sex, polite kidnap and a spot of breaking and entering. Selling your soul and scrubbing it whiter than white has surely never been so easy...
This is a delightful book about Major Ernest Pettigrew, retired, of Edgecombe St. Mary, England. The Major is a relic of his past and more than a little dismayed by the sloppy manners, and materialism of modern society. Enter Mrs. Ali, a widowed local shopkeeper of Pakistani descent who has also resigned herself to dignified, if solitary, last years. As unlikely as the this may be, this is a love story that is woven so carefully it becomes believable. It is also about change- the older values vs the younger ones, the british memories of the colonial era vs. those that still live in that country, the insularity of the English village vs. the multiracialism of today. I loved the characters, and particularly the humor. Well written dialogue throughout.

This short book of 122 pages is by the director of the Cornhill Training Course for training preachers and Bible teachers in the UK. The book is from his presentation at the 2008 Evangelical Ministerial Assembly in London. He bases his argument on several texts from Deuteronomy, 18:9-22 (The Authority of the Preached Word), 30:11-20 (Preaching that Transforms the Church), and 4:5-14 (Preaching that Mends a Broken World). It's well-written, but there are better books on preaching available, like Lloyd-Jones, for instance.

Yeah, I read another. Want to make something of it? :) Anyway, this one is scary(I bit off all my fingernails finishing it), all the environmentalists are crazy and want to kill all humans, and the plot is a little repetitive/predictable. But if you're going to be stuck on a plane and you're not afraid of ebola, it's alright I suppose. But you know, most airports do have bookstores!
"At the age of eight, Scout Finch is an entrenched free-thinker. She can accept her father's warning that it is a sin to kill a mockingbird, because mockingbirds harm no one and give great pleasure. The benefits said to be gained from going to school and keeping her temper elude her. The place of this enchanting, intensely moving story is Maycomb, Alabama. The time is the Depression, but Scout and her brother, Jem, are seldom depressed. They have appalling gifts for entertaining themselves—appalling, that is, to almost everyone except their wise lawyer father, Atticus. Atticus is a man of unfaltering good will and humor, and partly because of this, the children become involved in some disturbing adult mysteries: fascinating Boo Radley, who never leaves his house; the terrible temper of Mrs. Dubose down the street; the fine distinctions that make the Finch family "quality"; the forces that cause the people of Maycomb to show compassion in one crisis and unreasoning cruelty in another. Also because Atticus is what he is, and because he lives where he does, he and his children are plunged into a conflict that indelibly marks their lives—and gives Scout some basis for thinking she knows just about as much about the world as she needs to." I read this in early high school (freshman year I think) and remembered liking the story then. Half a lifetime later I couldn't remember the plot so listened to it as an audiobook. I fell in love all over again!

** spoiler alert ** I should start off this review saying the book has adult topics of sex, rape, attempted rape, abuse, and murder. None were done in too graphic of detail but they were there. With that being said the whole idea of the book was very intriguing. The whole world created by the author of punishment being fixed for every crime no matter the reason (except we find in certain instances) was interesting. In some ways it reminded me of the spirit of the law and the letter of the law. I also thought the whole idea of her being give the choice between escaping the noose or become the food taster for the commander was interesting. I liked the relationship between Yelena and Valek. I really did enjoy this book and had a hard time putting it down. Thanks again Ashley. ;)
This series about an antiquarian book seller in London is a favorite.
