This book is totally misrepresented by its title - do not be fooled! A book titled "The Year of Pleasures" should be ABOUT the year of pleasures and not actually be about a year of misery leading up to the decision to avoid suicide for a while longer and have some fun. I thought this would be a light, happy read, and it was instead the most depressing thing I've read in years. That said, if you're in the mood for a good cry, this is your book, hence the two stars.

I really enjoy fluffy mystery novels like these. Ones where the protagonist is light, fun and interesting, she isn’t perfect, but she’s also not TSTL. I especially enjoy them when the mystery isn’t too easy to figure out. The books in the Pepper Martin series are fun, perfect summer reading with just the right amount of love interest, intrigue and mystery. As much as I love books like this, I don’t think I would ever own them unless given to me as a prize in a contest or as a present. But I definitely recommend them to anyone who loves fun, flighty mysteries. There really isn’t anything different to say about each book as they follow the same formula and saying more than that would give away the plot of the book.

Outstanding. This woman can write. Each short story fascinated me. Most made me uncomfortable at some point. But, I appreciated that very much. I am certain that I will read this book again in the future, so I can revel in the quality of the writing and meet the characters one more time.

I liked Man Walks Into a Room, but couldn't get into this book. The first part is about an unlikable writer who trends toward selfishness. I liked the voice and the writing, but not the character. The second part took place in Israel, and was about an old man whose wife died. His son returns from London and the two have a contentious relationship. The third part took place in London and a man visits another writer. That's as far as I got before calling it quits. Each section has a different narrator, but is written in this strange style that feels like the characters are addressing the reader. Overall, after 80 some pages I'm not into it and the novel isn't gelling. I'm sure the stories come together somehow, but I don't have the patience for it.
