Easily the most detailed and fascinating book yet written about Bowie's early life and career. The timeline is 1947 to 1974, covering Bowie's life in England, up to and including Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane and Diamond Dogs. It includes all the tours David did up until 1974, including the US tours and visits, often in great detail. The photos and memorabilia are amazing, many I had never seen before and the layout and indexes are excellent too. If you thought you knew everything about the man then think again. As a fan of Bowie's for nearly 40 years it was a real pleasure to discover things I never knew anything about, plus find answers to some real nagging questions (The Man Who Sold The World history is particularly interesting). I originally ordered this from the UK as it was published there late last year. I believe there is a limited edition version too, but I haven't seen this yet so can't comment on the difference.

I read this for the first time in junior high and just re-read it for my young adult lit class. I discovered that it still makes me cry, but also that I only remembered the first half of the book. While I think it owes a lot to West Side Story, this is likely to remain a young adult standard for the forseeable future.
There is a lot of grit here, a lot of stark realism in the depiction of how people acted, and what they thought. It made me cry in more than a few places. There is so much about what I would guess really went on in the South in the way slaves were treated. In fact, this novel was written in a way that would make you think of events as if they were facts coming out of historical records. And they probably were. This novel opened my eyes to the reality of blacks owning slaves, and the moral and social implications of such ownership. It is actually, I think, a good counterpoint to Gone with the Wind, which I enjoyed a lot but which clearly put a rosy tint to the way slaves lived in Southern plantations.
This was good. I put it in the middle because it was a bit lengthy but I expected it being written for the "time" period. Towards the end I got frustrated with the length and started "skimming" pages...it didn't hurt the ending at all, I hadn't missed out on anything!

Absoultely amazing book. Cannot recommend it highly enough. I have made a pact with myself to re-read this book once every two years to be sure I remember the invaluable information and advice. See you again in two years, P & H!

Really interesting setting and concept, and some really likable characters (my favorite was Manchee the dog). I blew through this story pretty quickly, and since it ends on somewhat of a cliffhanger, I best be moving on to book #2 here pretty quickly.

I related to this book and probably still do today. A woman in a patriachal society, strong, intelligent and thwarted by her social position she has to choose between a variety of suitors. Thomas Hardy didn't write stories with happy endings but I always hoped it would be different for Bathsheba.

I don't like much suspence books, but the summary of this book seemed interesting so I gave it a try. I liked Perry, he was a nice guy and he deserved happiness and I'm happy he got his, uh, "happy" end, although I didn't liked Nick much -not that I disliked him- but he was quite... cold at times, to me. But still, it was a good read.

Absolutely devine. Hooked me right in from page 4. Detailed, epic love story, emotionally engaging and a bit of a history lesson to boot. I'll be reading the entire series. Thank you Paulline!!

A standard and thorough, if somewhat pious and wordy monograph on the international impact and connections of the Halle theologian and educator A.H. Francke. An essential account of the beginnings of Protestant missionary work.
Si! El Sr. McDonnell claramente le debe mucho al Sr. Schulz, y este libro es la confesión pública de amor, lealtad y cachorros cálidos al difunto gran Chuck.
