I'm almost ashamed to admit that I kept putting off this book because I didn't think I'd like Dageus all brooding and almost-evil after seeing his more lighthearted side in book 4. I am a fool, as it turns out. A fool of epic proportions. Because Dageus? He can pull off brooding and uber-powerful. Very, very well. Where to start here, where to start? Hmm. Obviously, Dageus pushed all my buttons. The big, sexy, Scottish Druid types are all the rage in my fantasies. Well, Karen Marie Moning's Druids are, at least. He was so relentlessly sexual that I couldn't help but like him. I mean, really! It's almost criminal the way he could bring a girl to her knees (heh) with just a look. And then he has that tragic "possessed by the souls of 13 evil Druids" thing going for him. *swoon* And he was holding out against them. *double swoon* I just... wanted the guy to get his happy ending. Yet,a s the darkness inside him kept swelling, I didn't know how it was going to happen. I really enjoyed the dynamic between Chloe and Dageus. He loves her inquisitive side and her thirst for knowledge. She doesn't want to be drawn to him yet she finds herself fascinated by him. He's a mass of contradictions at first and it isn't until they travel to the past that she begins to understand why. Speaking of which, I liked that we got some closure between Dageus and his father. I might be just the littlest, tiniest bit in love with the entire MacKeltar clan. I was intrigued when they popped up in the Fever series and they haven't let me down yet. *draws pink sparkly hearts around all their names* Aww. Aren't they just precious?? Don't you want one of your own? I do. Seriously. -Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal

So before I put my two cents in I thought we would see what Amazon.co.uk has to say about this book: Half-vampire Cat Crawfield is now Special Agent Cat Crawfield, woeking for the government to rid the world of the rogue undead. She's still using everything Bones, her sexy and dangerous ex, taught her, but when Cat is targeted for assassination, the only man who can help her is the vampire she left behind. Being around Bones awakens all her emotions, from the adrenaline rush of slaying vamps together, side by side, to the reckless passion that consumed them. But having a price on her head - wanted: dead or half-alive - means her survival depends on teaming up with Bones. And no matter how hard Cat tries to keep things professional between them, she'll find that desire lasts forever . . . and Bones won't let her get away again. This book for me was even better than the first one and so many parts of this made me laugh and made me cry. I love the fact that even though cat seems to lose people in her life she never lets it bring her down and she always seems to rise back up. Bones is gorgeous as ever and really draws you in. I have an Image of who he is in my head now and that makes it easier for me to inhale these books. I love the world that Jeaniene Frost is creating. Vampires running around with humans, half breeds, ghouls, ghosts, vampire law, etc. I do think that she could have gotten a little more original. It seems kind of all the same. I think that if she would have put her own spin on the vampire legend it would have made this book even more appealing for me and I would have enjoyed it that much more. Finally I love the mix of paranormal and romance and Urban fantasy with these books. Everyone always asks me where the line is. Urban fantasy is kick ass and solve a problem and Paranormal Romance is lets fall in love and solve a problem with lots of sex. This series so far is a good mix of both it keeps me entertained. Todays releases the way that they are its a tough thing to do.

Previous reviews suggest that this is very much a love it or hate it book, and reading through it, I can see why. There are things that frustrated me majorly: the two main examples were the constant playing with tenses (which, granted, I finally worked out was about reflecting the main character, Belinda's POV vs anyone else's); and the decision to have a world that's EXACTLY like Elizabethan Europe except that all the names (both country and monarch names) are different but still 100% recognisable as their real world counterparts. The frustration was then compounded by the lack of a map anywhere in the book, so in the first chapter, where the author was throwing country names at me thick and fast, I had no idea which collection of syllables referring to which country what until I got descriptions in later chapters of the major cities there, at which point it became obvious. That said, I did like Belinda as a heroine. She's another in a long line of powerful-but-broken heroines that just appeal to me; and I thought Ms Murphy did a good job of setting up how she became (or was made) so broken in the early chapters. And I also liked some of the B-characters and look forward to finding out more about them in the next book (which, yes, I intend to read since the library has a copy - I'm just not in any rush to do so) I can't honestly think of any one of my friends to whom I'd recommend this book wholeheartedly with the expectation they'd enjoy it - but at the same time, I didn't completely dislike it either. It is, I think, a hard book to categorise, let alone review.
