This was an interesting book as it made the reader look at what was really insanity. I agree with Mari when she stated that the outside world was the same as inside: the people built up walls for themselves and formed groups to explain their existance. Some of the patients found the inside world to be freeing, as Veronika did, because they were able to act as they truely wanted since they were "insane." It was an interesting and enjoyable read.

A bit long-winded, but a perfect snapshot of a particular neighborhood in a particular era. Also, Super Goat Man. 'Nuff said.
It's one of those classic fantasy novels. Probably part of the reason that I turned out to be the kinda geek that I am. A very fun, light, and easy read.
Whoa, the things people will do when they're desperate for love! I didn't enjoy this Hoffman book as much as I have some of her others. But realize this was one of her earlier novels and you can see how her style and writing has matured over the years.

This was a fantastic book!
A little weird, but hilarious
Charles Dickens, you so silly!
It was a wack book. Too much description of 16th century Europe, too many random characters, too much wandering around, the ending was confusing. I really thought I missed a chapter somewhere explaing what happened to Emily

I can only echo what other reviewers have said. He brings up an important issue, but does a miserable job of it. Louv bases most of his arguments on "intuition" and terrible logic. The worst of his arguments is that a)children with autism and ADHD can control their behavior and symptoms better when they're outside. b)there's a lot more autism and ADHD than there used to be. c)we don't play outside as much as we used to. d)not playing outside CAUSES autism and ADHD. ????? That's a characteristic argument from the book. Similarly incoherant is his assertion that fishing is acceptable, but hunting isn't. He implies that even bicycles and playgrounds interfere with experiencing nature, and that the only way we can raise healthy, well-rounded children is to send them out into untouched fields. Anything less is a failure. And it's sad, because instead of convincing people that we need to get away from the computer and play outside, he convinced me that he's a fanatic and a really bad writer. I'd rather read Emerson.

this is an extremely interesting yet dry book about the women who helped establish the United States. It's amazing how little credit these women get in the grand scheme of things. it made me realize the resilience and passion these women had in order to create the land in which i live today.
