This book left me feeling agitated

A collection of short pieces capturing human experience. What strikes me most is the play of atmosphere on the characters and how one particular character in each tale will influence (often for the worse) the others.
A sweet, enjoyable book. Lovely story of widow-widower love, which is obstructed by family dramas.

What an excellent book recommended to me by my daughter the speech language pathologist. The brain is a fascinating thing and capable of rearranging itself when subjected to trauma. I had to track down a copy from an interlibrary loan and it was well worth the wait. Just one more example of how truly amazing our bodies are. An easy read for any layperson since it's stories of both pioneers in neuroscience and patients who have benefited from neuro-rehabilitation.

It’s Friday the 13tDavid Peace's 1974h, December 1974, and ten year old Clare Kemplay disappeared on her way home from school. Junior crime reporter Eddie Dunford attends the police press conference, eager for his first byline, even though his father’s funeral is in two hours. Anti-hero Dunford ties Clare’s disappearance to the kidnappings of two girls in neighboring counties. Eventually he ends up on the wrong side of both the corrupt local police and the puppet-masters of his community, e.g. the business moguls and/or the Yorkshire mafia, depending upon how you view them. 1974 is filled with unsympathetic characters, and with ugly people doing bad things. There were a few plot details I didn’t fully understand. Did police burn down the camp because they wanted to pin Clare’s kidnapping on the gypsies? Or were they clearing the ground for developers? Or both? Neither? The story relies on dialogue to tell the story in addition to terse, fast prose. Luckily the dialogue is strong. The women of the novel, however, aren’t strong—they’re expendable. They’re also memorable, from poor Clare with swan wings sewn onto her back to the mother of another missing girl that Dunford may or may not love. The convoluted ending left me scratching my head. 1974 is the first novel in the Red Riding Quartet. Hopefully the unresolved plotlines will be cleared up in later books.

Incredible allegory that challenged my walk. Lewis claims that nothing in this story represents anything else- o.k. This book was recommended by a directing friend, Karen- its intriguing.

Great story of how the animals prepare for the winter. It also illustrates the effects of a big snow storm.

Continuing my short story kick, i decided to read (or re-read, i honestly can't remember) J.D. Salinger's "Nine Stories", aptly titled for the nine short stories contained within. There is one thing that unifes all the stories, abrupt and possibly distrubing endings. Salinger spends pages and pages filling out the lives and realities of these exceedingly interesting characters and then yanks the hand brake on the train and derails the story in usually one or two sentences. The white space left on the page is tantamount to taunting the reader, showing that more could have been said, more could have been explained, but Salinger really didn't feel it was necessary. My personal favorites out of the bunch are "For Esme - with Love and Squalor" and "Teddy". I'm not sure what makes these two stories stand out for me, but one of their common traits is that they both star or co-star extemely intelligent or overly mature children. Salinger creates these pre-adults with such ease that it's hard to decide whether they are adorable or creepy, possibly both. I would certainly recommend this to someone looking to take a break, crank in a whole story in a short amount of time and just randomly work your way through a solid series of stories.
