This would be a really good book for teens, or for new Christians. For mature believers, it's full of good reminders, and good examples of things we should already be practicing in our walk with Christ. But don't expect it to be life-changing, or even challenging in terms of giving specific "next steps" to implement changes in your life. There are a lot of great metaphors and stories - great fodder for sermon illustrations for all you pastors out there.

I didn't like this one as much as the others she's written, but still was a good read.

I read this play when I was in New York traveling to see my wife in Lancaster, Pennsylvania on the Amtrak. I picked it up because, nowadays, I'm trying to read or view anything that is considered a "classic" now that I am more mature and can understand "classics." It was one of those books/plays that I never wanted to end. The idea of making some middle-class grunt into the subject of highbrow drama was ground breaking. Go see the play or read the book!

I don't have to read the book to know what a disaster it must be, especially considering what preceded it. But just for kicks, let's break down this synopsis, shall we? "Bethany and Xavier are even closer since battling Jake Thorn and his evil influence (in Halo) and Beth and her angel siblings must still protect Venus Cove from the Dark Forces. When a party game – a séance – inadvertently releases Jake from the Underworld, he disguises himself and tricks Beth into taking a ride on his motorcycle. When the highway opens up and swallows them, Beth learns too late that she’s now a prisoner in hell. What happens to angels there? As her archangel brother, Gabriel, her sister Ivy, Xavier, and her best friend, Molly search for her, Beth must weigh Jake’s bargaining for her freedom: one night with him, and she will be released back to Earth. Can Jake be trusted in this wager? And is he also using Beth to engineer the fall of the archangel Gabriel? Xavier has already lost one love – when Jake tricks him into thinking that Bethany is dead, his grief and anger result in a betrayal that will leave Bethany – and readers – wondering if he is so good after all. It will be up to Beth to use everything she’s learned about her powers as an angel – and about love – to free herself and those she loves from the clutches of Hades." Translation: "Bethany and Xavier are still making out instead of actually doing anything useful, and Gabriel and Ivy are working overtime to haul Beth's slacker-ass weight on their trumped up 'heavenly mission'. Words (like Dark Forces) are still unnecessarily capitalized. When Bethany does something incredibly stupid like, say, dabbling in 'dark magic' and reverses everything she supposedly 'achieved' in the last book, a trite and cliched plotline comes back for another visit! Because she's a stupid little shit with no instincts, she gets on TEH EVUL MOTORCYCLE OF DOOOOOM because everyone knows that motorcycles are always bad, amirite? When, as any reasonable heavenly being would expect, all hell literally breaks loose, Bethany is captured and the audience is left to wonder how anyone this stupid could have avoided such a fate for an entire book before now. Presumably, hell sucks. In the human world, everyone else has STOPPED THE PRESSES so they can search for their useless dead weight of a companion; all good work has no doubt ground to a halt because Bethany is so fucking incompetent. Meanwhile in hell, Jake Thorn is trying to put the moves on Bethie for reasons no one will comprehend, except maybe that he gets particularly turned on by people with only fluff between their ears. Also, he might have a plan going on other than 'seducing' Bethie, but no doubt this is not focused on because showing how the 'heroine' is attractive to everyone is really more important than that 'Plot' thing Adornetto's heard tell of. Xavier is angsting, angsting, angsting in the meantime and eventually does something that reveals him for the asshole this reader knew him to be all along. In the end, the Power of Lurve will save the day in true-to-form sickening fashion." Those of you who have read it - how close am I?

"I love this man sitting before me now, because I do not possess him and he does not possess me. We are free in our mutual surrender; I need to repeat this dozens, hundreds, millions of time, until I finally believe my own words. " one of my very favorite books.

I tried all the way to 220 to like the book. But I just don't care for any of the characters. I can honestly but down the book right now and not even care how it ends.

I'm going to summarize this review. I usually look for shorter ones so hopefully you are too. So I've read the entire series & they're all wonderful. This one was even more interesting because it had more to do with the Japanese culture (They mention: manga-heads, big-eyes & they speak japanese) instead of the typical. I'm not fond of the new slang though (ex: Kickers, brain-missing). But I just expected more.. just something BETTER. To save the world, not have a misunderstanding. That about ruined the ending for me. I do recommend this book though, Westerfeld is a talented author.
