Sadly, I've wasted time on not one but two Dan Brown books. This was even worse than DaVinci Code. As a computer scientist, the premise of the book is just absurd. The prose is awful. The characters have no life. The plot "twists" are extremely obvious. Ban Dan Brown from your life. Even if you are stuck at O'Hare on a 5 hour layover and there are no other books to be had, you are better off watching paint dry than reading one of his books.

For as much as I like the idea of growing more of my own food, this book is a decent reality check on how tough that might actually be. Amusingly written, worth picking up from the library.

Heartbreaking, yes, but sometimes hilarious as well. Genius? Perhaps, or at least clever. Eggers' style is fresh, creative, frenetic, often neurotic, attention deficit, and always at full speed. A life story like his just begs to be written about. I agree with those who thought the book bogged down in self absorbtion in places, but I loved the scatteredness of the diversions, distracting diagrams and almost painful self-conciousness - I thought it rang much more true to life, and the way I think about it, than a perfectly organized and linear narrative ever does.

“Deadly Treasure” is a new LDS mystery novel by first-time author Jillayne Clements. Set against the backdrop of the Lost Rhoades Mine, the story combines legends from the past and a contemporary setting. Lexi Rhoades is heartbroken when her grandfather dies. He called her a few days before and left a message on her cell, telling her he wants to talk to her. But by the time she gets the message, it’s too late. While clearing out her grandfather’s things, she comes across a trunk filled with old belongings, one of them being a locket. Lexi finds herself drawn to the locket and decides to keep it as a memento of her grandfather, only to learn that the locket holds the key to a mystery that has been in the family for generations. The Lost Rhoades Mine was something of a family legend, the story passed down from parents to children. Lexi knew she was descended from Thomas Rhoades, the man who was supposedly chosen by the local Indians to come into the mine and take what was needed for the good of the Church, but she was never sure if the story was true or not. Her grandfather always believed it was and intended to prove it. As she goes through his things, she wonders if that’s why he tried to contact her before his death. Her curiosity sparked, she decides to go on a treasure hunt of her own. The story combines mystery, suspense and romance in a way that makes for an enjoyable read. I did feel that the mystery could have been introduced a little more naturally, and I also felt that the dialogue became a bit preachy toward the end, but those two small criticisms aside, I recommend “Deadly Treasures” for a light afternoon’s read.

Greaat interweaving of history, crossing time periods, some fact, while pushing the limits on our understanding of what is real and tested in some so called scientific way and what we can never be quite sure about.
Funny and absorbing. I even liked most of he characters. And the ending. Took off one star cause i felt like Bray was categorizing the girls by their professions. And because all but one of the guys was a "dewsh"; I thought that was just a little sexist.

Lary May’s Screening Out the Past: The Birth of Mass Culture and the Motion Picture Industry traces the arc of mass culture from technological usurper of morality, class, and archaic sentiments to a tool wielded by those interested in the extension of Victorianism back to the powerful instrument of modernization. Modern industrialization, of which the cinema and consumption are only two spokes of the wheel, contributed to the democratization of culture. The dramatic change from “Victorian to modern life” was met with both trepidation and hope (xii). Much of society looked upon this new motion picture technology as a potential corrupter of children and youth. On the other hand, others, such as many Progressive reformers, saw it as a means to further Victorian moral hegemony. May wrote, “Reformers initially saw the amusements of the “lower orders” as the most visible form of decay. Yet in looking for a tool to restore progress, they looked outside institutions of power toward the potential of leisure” (59) For example, films by D.W. Griffith, a director who had a “commitment to saving Victorianism in the face of major external threats,” delivered Victorian ideals rather than modern ones (95). According to White, Griffith’s “forward-looking techniques were fused to a backward-looking ideal” (97). Thus, for many reformers the movies could help promote the very values that they were supposedly undermining. Once film producers fully understood the money-making potential of “stars” (i.e. movie actor and actresses that receive lots of publicity) they used them to sell their pictures. The star revolutionized the industry by ushering in ideals of the modern world. Unlike their predecessors, who tried to uphold the values of Victorianism, stars like Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks “pointed to the twentieth century…[and] tried to make high-level consumption a means for restoring family stability," (146) The focus on mass consumption “showed that resentment of the rich could be lessened,” (199). Thus, although the rich were despised in the 1880s, by 1920, they were idolized and mimicked.

I really enjoyed this book. The idea is a little scary, and knowing that even though this story is fiction, this kind of thing happens all of the time and could happen to anyone. I had a suspicion about the "bad guy" from about 40% through...but didn't really KNOW it was that person until 75% through so that was good. I was hoping there was a sequel out there, but no such luck. Maybe some day.
Quickly put, these books are the advanced texts for the Christian spiritual life. If you want to know the depths, you'll find them here.
