Fascinating true account of the deception used by England before the invasion of Sicily in World War II. "Man who never was" movie was based on this incident.

Awesome!!!! Almost everyone in my Young Adult Lit class read this book in one day - because it was so awesome, not because they needed to have it read for class.
Eh. I am trying to find another Ishiguro that I like as much as Never Let Me Go and I am failing. That said, objectively this is a very interesting story in that it's about a WW2 era butler so dedicated to his butlering that he is like a robot, totally without understanding of things like emotion and humor. Obviously you know this as you've probably seen the movie. I saw the movie a zillion years ago, so I don't remember it well other than to say to think of Anthony Hopkins as the object of anyone's affections doesn't do it for me. The thing is, the interactions with Miss Kenton are so few and far between, it's interesting to see how that was teased out for the meat of the movie. Mostly he's just yapping about dignity and butlering and then about the Nazi sympathizing story of his employer. I get the points of those, and it makes sense to have a character so divorced from his emotions focus on the boring things and not the important ones. However, I would have just enjoyed it more if the balance were in the other direction. Also the device of him recalling things through his drive is kind of zzz. All that said, the end when he finally sees Miss Kenton and they use the metaphor of the day of their life and making the best of what remains of the day is very pretty, and a nice thing to lend it's name to the book. Nonetheless, just not very gripping. Sad.
I really enjoyed this historical novel about the California Gold Rush and history of the state thereafter. Quite a large book but was so impressed with the good writing that I didn't mind - even went out and purchased another John Jakes novel. This is an engrossing novel of the first degree...shared with friends who all really enjoyed it as well. I want to give it less than a five star rating by a tad, but more than a four!
A great travelogue that first get my interested in cultures across the globe; specifically the peoples of the Himalayan mountains. A great book for Everest climbing lovers. Jenkin's goes on part of his journey with climbers in order to gain access to certain areas. Exhilarating !

I liked the overall premise of the book. It's one of those theories that you read and think to yourself "duh," but it is so difficult to put what Rosenberg is advocating. A must read for anyone struggling with defensive communication in their interpersonal relationships.
An interesting book that I would have never chosen to read on my own. It provides an evolutionary walk through various crops, domesticated animals and societies.

I've enjoyed this book, a tip from Kerri, and have given it away to Ella, Sally and Sheva Lipsker - I like it so much!
