To its partial credit, this book doesn't contain the glaring historical errors suggested by the blurb, which must have been written by someone who didn't read the book and didn't know the history (see below for details of the errors). On the other hand, I don't think it's very well-written or coherent. There's far too much point-of-view switching, starting with the views of unspecified members of a mob and going on to the points of view of a large number of major and minor characters, none of whom (I think) are portrayed with much depth. For the most part, I don't think the reader gets a good sense of what motivated William or (especially) Adelaide, much less the other characters. It would be possible to write a really good historical novel about King William IV and Queen Adelaide, but this isn't it. For those who want to read about them, I'd suggest reading one or more biographies and skipping this book. And now for the errors: Princess Adelaide wasn't scarcely more than a girl, she was almost 26 years old (then considered a very advanced age for an unmarried princess) when she married Prince William Henry in 1818. Among the many who thought her an obstacle to the Whigs' plans for legislative reform after she became Queen in 1830, she was highly unpopular and not admired. Her prayers (hardly mentioned in the book, although Adelaide was well known to be a devout Christian) did go unanswered when she prayed for a child who would live beyond infancy, but there was no doubt about the English Succession during the reign of William IV (1830-1837), as Princess Victoria (born in 1819) did live long beyond infancy. It never seemed that every princess in Europe hoped to be the mother of the next King of England; specifically, the multiple princesses who declined to marry William (before he married Adelaide) did not. There was a real "bouquet of brides" (married in 1818, after the death of Princess Charlotte in November 1817 did leave the succession in doubt). However, it consisted only of the brides of the Dukes of Clarence (William), Kent (Edward, father of Victoria), and Cambridge (Adolphus, the youngest and the only one of the lot with a decent reputation).
