The first book in the Nightside series, reminiscent of Jim Butchers Harry Dresden books. I enjoyed it, Taylor is mysterious yet likeable, and has a good heart. I didn't care for the ending much, a little predictable, but I will read more in the series.

Wow, what happened here? The Nightside books are usually pretty awesome! This one was just unreadable. Very disappointing.
This was a great, upbeat, funny at times look at the impact one person's life can have on those around them. I want to read everything she's written after reading this one.
Loved the way the characters came together.
Hated it! Found it repulsive!

I think this book totally rocked, although I think it started slowly. The book traces Lucien Chardon (du Rubempre) through his journey to Paris from a small provincial town. It's kind of the classic "young man goes to the big city and gets mixed up with the wrong crowd..." sort of tale, and it's amazing how it totally reminded me of first moving to New York. I don't think this book is for everyone... I read it in English and I think Balzac can get very long-winded at times, but I found it highly enjoyable nonetheless. Balzac totally made me care about the characters and I couldn't put it down. I started reading the sequel, 'A Harlot High and Low' because I really wanted to find out what happened to Lucien... but I never got through that one!

The last book of the trilogy and of course there are no more Madison brothers for hero's so this book is all about Hannah and Lillian's brother Nick and the great grand-daughter of the woman who started the entire Madison-Harte feud. It is only fitting that Nick and Olivia be the couple that completely ends the feud. As with Gabe and Rafe (hero's from book 1 & 2) as I read the book, all I could picture was this brooding guy standing against the wall in deep thought assimilating a plan to get the girl in such a way that she will walk away thinking it was all her idea. Classic Krentz of the 90's. At some point all her hero's have this dialougue going amongst themselves on just how to accomplish that one goal. I only gave this a 3 star because compared to all of Jayne Ann Krentz books the heroine is not as dominating a character as every single one of the other books by her. And that is a shame IMO because that is one of the single most enjoyable aspects of her books. The heroine is usually just as "out there as the hero and they both share center stage. Nick dominates in this book and I missed enjoying Olivia as much as I normally enjoy the heroine's in Jayne Ann Krentz books. However, it was as wonderful as any of her books.

An uplifting, feel-good story about a girl who, in the 1920s Midwest, overcomes obstacles to make a better life for herself.

Sad story. Don't read it if you are looking for something uplifting.
