I found this book riveting. I read every chance I could today, couldn't put it down! In July 1942, the French police enthusiastically rounded up Jewish families in a Nazi decreed raid and deported them to French internment camps and ultimately to Auschwitz. The book tells two interlocking stories - the modern-day story is narrated by a female reporter who unearths the facts about the Jewish family who once occupied her family's apartment before they were rounded up and deported by indifferent French police (and the effect of her investigation on her life and marriage). The second tells the story from the perspective of the little Jewish girl who lived in that apartment in 1942. I knew absolutely nothing about this true but very ugly piece of history. Everyone assumes it was just the Nazis who were responsible for the destruction of the Jews in Europe. Who knew that the French were also involved? Moreover, they went above and beyond the call of duty in making sure they rounded up as many Jews as they could....then did everything they could to cover it up when it was time to write the history books. (Of course, there were any number of French heroes who hid, clothed and fed Jewish children as well. There is a special place in heaven for them.) I was so engrossed in the historical facts, I thought the character development was a secondary consideration. The characters weren't particularly likeable, but I think this made them more realistic. In real life, people aren't saints.
