"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times..." My first Charles Dickens book. Def. not one to half-read...to tell the truth I had to use Cliffsnotes for half of it! I love the tale, though. There's no doubt it is my FAVORITE book so far. "It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; It is a far, far better rest that I go to, than I have ever known."

This book and The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollen have radically changed my views on eating and buying food. I am much more aware of seasonality, local eating, and organic farming practices. Kingsolver delivers a lot of useful information but couches it in an extremely readable family memoir, divided up by month. Because of this book, I am going to change to way I spend money on food: I will support my local farmer's market; I will not buy foods that are shipped long distances with expensive fossil fuels; I will pay attention to the seasonality of produce. I think this book should be required reading for everyone. As a country with no truly native food-culture (beyond Big Macs and TV dinners), it would serve us well to all become more aware of where our food comes from, the farmers who work tirelessly to provide us our food, yet get paid a fraction of their worth, and learn to think of our food in terms of the season in which they're best. Pick up this book and be prepared to re-think your grocery lists!

It's taken me awhile to get through this book. Not because it's bad mind you. I enjoy the way it alternates between the interpersonal dramas of Franklin and Eleanor with the social/economic/political upheaval going on at the time. Two more weeks and I'll be done. Yay.

really I give this 3 1/2 stars. I would recommend this book to a friend, some of the translation is a little hard to follow. Why is it called the Hangman's daughter? She really doesn't tie things together or anything. It should just be called "the hangman" or something like that
