Most recent YA dystopian releases have focused on conformity and restriction in societies that have over-developed. Blood Red Road, Moira Young’s debut release coming out in June, takes the other path, into a future society where the Ten Commandments don’t even exist as a myth. Saba and her twin brother Lugh grow up on the shores of Silverlake, a misnomer of a place where windstorms are as common as a snowstorm in Alaska. Their mother died giving birth to their younger sister, Emmi, now 9, leaving only their father to scavenge food for the family and maintain their house built of tires and remnant sheet metal. Yet Saba is content in this life because of her adoration of her twin brother. That is until the Tonton soldiers steal him away and kill their father. Saba must quest into the unknown world to find her brother. Where this book shines is in the construction of Saba. While her lack of education and sophistication comes out on the first page via her choppy and almost Southern-like dialect, she’s also tough and determined, which will draw in any “girl power!” readers immediately. The plot moves as quickly as a Suzanne Collins or Dan Brown thriller, another perk to readers looking for adventure. Throw in kidnapping, cage-match fighting, and killer worms ala Tremors, and it becomes nearly impossible to find a place to put the book down. Yet unwanted traces of “this is a debut novel” lingered with me after the last page was turned. Saba is one of those “strong, powerful” role models many females clamor for, but at times she’s too cold, especially with her sister and love interest, Jack, and this becomes a bit unbelievable for an 18-year-old protagonist. A few plot twists are predictable as well. The old “I thought I killed the villain but I guess not” ploy can work once, but after that the trick is tedious and overdone—and again, plays against the cunning intelligence the author readers to see in Saba. To Katniss Everdeen: I think your “queenship” of the dystopian protagonists is still secure. However, you might need to make room in your court, as Saba might soon become one of your ladies-in-waiting this June.
