This is a nutty little novel (yes, NOVEL, as in FICTION) that is quirky and delightfully dark. Written in a journal style, this is the tale of Emma O'Hallahan's life after shooting her nutcase husband and burying him in the backyard. The book jacket quotes some publication called The Face, which describes this book as "Kurt Vonnegut meets Catch 22 meets a hallucinogenic Golden Girls." And that's about right.

Ashamed to say I'd never heard of Richard Yates until the film of RR came out a couple of years ago. I remember reading an article just before the film's release in The Guardian where all these famous writers were saying 'this is my favorite book, god I hope they don't tone it down/f*ck it up/oh no Leonardo DiCaprio is playing Frank I don't see that etc' With so many people whose work I admire caring so much about this book I'd never heard of, I immediately added RR to my groaning Amazon wish list. Finally got round to it(thanks to a great second hand copy picked up at Oxfam in my parents hometown, so no cheesy copy with Kate Winslet on the cover) and its all true. Its rare for a book to take you into its world so immediately and for every chapter, every paragraph to count. Stunning. I want to read everything Yates has written now.

This book has a creative story that I don't feel I've read a lot before. The author also writes in a way that keeps the momentum of the story going. I kept feeling like this book was going to get predictable or boring and it never did.

The message in this book was clear - believe in yourself, be persistent and you can achieve anything. It was especially touching because the author tells about the "English Only" times when he grew up and how he overcame personal obstacles. I've read other books by Villaseñor and really enjoy how he tells a story.

** spoiler alert ** I loved this book, but i have to say it had a really really crappy ending. I have no idea if Sam & Grace end up together for the rest of their lives get married or anything like that. I could understand the ending if there was going to be another book but there isnt so i didnt like the ending at all. But the rest of the book was good. It was intense and it kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time.
