Other than that this play is perennially performed by high schools, I can't say much good about it.

After I started reading this novel, I found a few reviews online that derogatorily referred to it as being "a bodice-ripper" instead of a solid historical novel. I didn't see a negative there; actually, the romance aspect was more of a plus for me than a minus. Quite frankly, my favorite parts were when Amy & Richard (the main characters) were getting together. I suppose true die hard historical novel fans might find that kind of thing distracting from the story, but not me. I also enjoyed the side story of Eloise. I was afraid that the author might switch back and forth too much between the present-day line and the actual story, but I'd say that was only about 10% of the entire novel, which was a good thing in my opinion. All along, I thought I knew who the Pink Carnation was, even when Eloise (who had been blinded by her assumptions and previous research) apparently had no clue. But I was wrong! The revealing of the identity of the Pink Carnation was surprising, satisfying, and sweet.
Terribly organized, dated, and out-of-touch with reality this book offers nothing to the serious or beginning imbiber. Basically a poorly written attempt to get you to purchase Mr. Boston products which, really, tells you all you need to know about it.
brilliant look at the emotions of fear and trepidation and a desire for recognition for one's work and efforts. maybe? its great.

I'm not sure I like David Sedaris, I tried with all the hype and all but I'm not sold. OK - almost finished the book and totally not sold. I just don't think it's funny.
This intimate account of a young Somali woman growing up in the turmoil of the always changing political and religious cultures of the African continent helped me to understand such a very different way of life. But ultimately why people strive and sometimes are willing to die for all aspects of freedom.
What a waste.

Most people either love Hemingway or hate him -- there's very little "middle ground." I admire his minimalist writing, as frustrating as it can be, and I despise his two-dimensional female characters, who are so unrealistically rendered that you either have to laugh at or be horrified by their dialogue. Still, this novel does not romanticize war or the men who fight in it, and although my students think of this as a love story, there's a lot to question about the relationship between Catherine and Frederic. Lots to discuss in this one -- and I always like books with lots to discuss.

I enjoyed this book. It was a quick read and kept moving and didn't get bogged down and maudlin considering the subject. I enjoy reading books the include family dynamics and strong female characters.
