I found this book to be a fresh and postmodern take on race relationships while still being artful literature. Smith did an excellent job of portraying developed characters that diversely reveal and conceal their multi racial identities. It also has a hard hitting message about the pitfalls of ego within academia. Pushed me to see that intelligence and sophistication do not necessarily lead to virtue. I read this again for an antiRacist discussion group! Zadie Smith has such a great economy and clarity with words. This second time around I was able to examine Smith's views of "beauty" which I interpreted as how people pursue their ideals- she shows with every character that the pursuit of their ideals is always flawed but is a primary driver in their choices. Below are some discussion questions from the group (which includes potential spoilers): PART 1: Inspired by the epigraph: "We refuse to be each other". How is Howard alienated from his family? (racially- e.g. white privilege and denial of difference, and by his personal choices) PART 2: On page 214 Prof. Claire Malcolm describes 'fittingness' as "when your chosen pursuit and your ability to achieve it- no matter how small or insignificant both might be- are matched exactly, are fitting". At which scenes do any of the Belseys achieve this? What is the racial component of "fittingness" and how does that shape a vision of beauty? PART 3: Chapters 11 and 12 are the climax of the book and many accusations are made. What is Carl's opinion about Wellingtonians (p 417)? Who does Monty Kipps accuse of stealing his painting (p 421-422)? What reason did Levi give for stealing the painting (p 428-429)? How are each of them wrong? and what personal motivations or insecurities cloud each of their justifications?

Dreoteth, a self-published book by Danielle Bourdon, is a dark fantasy, or perhaps fantastical horror about Humans and the creatures that prey on them. The author has a struggle from the start. Bourdon chose to have a very unlikeable main character, in that he hates humans and humanity, and most importantly, eats them. This is quite a hurdle. Most protagonists are likable or at least someone that we as the reader can identify with. This is especially important in books with fantastical settings because we need someone to help us slide into this new world. This is where Bourdon shows us her first trick. Our main character is himself a foreigner to the strange land, so the explanations feel natural and there's no sudden information dumps. We are discovering with Dreoteth. Also, if he isn't necessarily likable, Dreoteth is at least interesting, and the way his character continues to change throughout the novel is fascinating. It felt very fresh to me. There are so many books about the things that go bump in the night, and this one manages pull a new, vibrant thread into that tapestry. This is not a slasher flick that dwells on the perversions of the monster. This is a story about the trials of a predator, it's about the hunt and about the kill, without remorse, but also without cruelty. There were a few editing problems, but otherwise this is a solid book and I highly recommend it. I especially recommend it to people who like deconstructions of fantasy tropes, dragons, fans of horror and anyone tired of books with political intrigue(it's nice but you need a break sometimes!). I couldn't put it down, which you could probably guess from the fact that I finished my last book yesterday! Check out my other reviews at my blog
