I read Pete Hamill books for many reasons, but one is because I love to see how he plays out his adoration for New York City. The city is more than a location for Hamill, it is a character in his writings. The man is in love with the place, its setting, history, people, quirks and sites. Through him, I get glimpses into the New York of the past, in the days before chain stores and globalization. It's one of the main things that keeps me reading Hamill -- he keeps declaring his love, and I keep exploring the New York of the early 1900s when my family first arrived, and when my parents were young. North River is full of the Depression, gangs, soldiers home from the war, the Tammany bosses, and the world of immigrants: Irish, Italian and Jewish, primarily. But it's also a love story and a story of a father/grandfather's love. What a joy it was to spend a few days in 1934 with Mr Hamill's story.

If you've read any other of Gregory's books, you'll be a little surprised by the narrative viewpoint here. I love smart historical fiction with a romantic twist -- it's junk food for the mind -- and everyone knows Gregory is one of the best but when you get to know this girl of a fool, you will find yourself feeling every little twist and fearing for her life and safety as she acts out a duplicitous double life (believe me, I'm not being redundant by saying that) and, ultimatly, finds the path the womanhood.

again- nothing really new to me- very very long- ended up skimming much of it. Probably better as a reference book for topics (although, I would probably use the internet instead).
I think I experienced every emotion I've ever felt reading this book. It was wonderful! Thomas Hardy has this incredible way of building his characters up and then chopping them off at the knees.

In 538 pages Oz walks us through the paths of pain, sorrow and love and along the way presents to us the reality of life in the newly established country and the face of a dragged culture.

While reading this book, I could appreciate the creativity that it took to write. The characters felt ambiguous and at times, hard to connect with. When I was reading I relly wanted to love this book, but could only go as far as admiring it. The author seemed to have a brilliant mind, but I feel like some of his thoughts got misplaced. This was later a less issue when I got to see Neil Gaiman, the author, reading aloud his own book. He seemed to be able to express more when reading it aloud than when he was writing it. This makes a lot of sense because Gaiman is famous for his comic book series. After I found out more about the author, I grew a better appreciation for the novel. I can see a select amount of students really enjoying the dark side/mystery of the novel. I do not however see myself teaching this book in a classroom setting. There isn't much deep thought process (other than the question of death) and the book would create more controversy than what it is worth teaching. But I would most definitely have this book on my shelves for students to read on their own.
Is it great literature? No. Is it pretty adequate escapism, perfect for a beachside, poolside, mindless Sunday afternoon reading? It certainly is.
I like every Tony Hillerman book I read. It's the mix of Navajo culture, spirituality, and suspense that keeps me turning the pages.
I am becoming a great fan of David Sedaris's work
