A lot of good stuff in here; and yet, a lot left to be substantiated. Though, I generally agree with her premise. Worth reading for sure.

I would give it 4 1/2 or 4 3/4 quarters stars any day! This is a wonderful fantasy book--very inventive, surprising, and with a healthy romance and an imperfect heroine who has much that is admirable. I would love to spoil the plot, but all I will say is let you me know when you've read it and we'll share!

In 1866, celebrated English explorer David Livingstone set out from Zanzibar to explore uncharted regions of the African continent with the intention of finding the source of the Nile, but promptly disappeared. Riding the publicity, The New York Herald hired then-unknown American reporter and Civil War veteran Henry Morton Stanley to lead an expedition to locate the famed adventurer. Dugard's storytelling makes Into Africa read like the most outlandish adventure novel, complete with lion attacks, crippling disease, savage headhunters, and vicious slave traders. Alternating chapters show what both men endure as they journey closer to each other, culminating with that infamous greeting, "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" Into Africa was a great pleasure to read.

This is another great book worth a re-read as an adult. I would have given it 5 stars, but I think Paulsen never fully addressed "the secret" behind Brian's parents' divorce. The adventure/survival story alone is worth 5 stars. This story is actually quite graphic in parts... Brian is attacked by a moose, survives through a tornado and seeing the fish-eaten body of the pilot still trapped in the plane in the lake. Oh, and the plane crash! The whole thing is very well written and realistic (at least I think it is, I have no idea what I would be doing out there). Brian's focus and resourcefulness are very impressive. I also appreciate that Paulsen wrote this in a realistic way and didn't hold back from showing us Brian's fear and misery during some parts, which may be scarier than a moose in the end.

This book was great. I was guessing all the wrong "villains". Great page turner. I guess the old saying is true: two wrongs don't make a right, but it sure does make a great book.
Hilarious

Pictures of NYC taken in the exact same place, seventy years apart. What's not to love?
It was very...interesting. As a democrat and a liberal, I wanted to find out what fuels the other side. As content goes, it was very poor, as she made blanket statements and backed up her work with only a few examples which could be easily refuted. Her arguements were devoid of logic, not due to content but due to the way she argued. A high school debater could have made her book look like a fool.
