This is the shittiest collection of stories I've ever read. It reminds me of those in-class exercises where you have 5 words that you have to incorporate into a story and only 10 minutes to write it. This book sucks ass.

YA novel (first in series of four) set in a dystopian future society that mandates cosmetic surgery at 16 so that everyone is "pretty". Interesting points about societal pressures to fit in and look like everyone else, and the danger of constantly bombarding people with the message that they're not good enough. Great protagonist and well plotted with dark twists - read it in one go. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

4 1/2 stars if I want to be really honest. Fun read, lighthearted with the occasional dab of heavy. I've been meaning to read some Scalzi for a while and I'm glad I started with this book. Now I just need to figure out which one to pick up next.

First and foremost let me say that Record Collecting For Girls is totally a niche book. By that I mean unless you are a music nerd you aren't going to really get Record Collecting For Girls. But it's more than that. If you aren't a music nerd who is also a girl AND grew up in the same time period as Smith, chances are this book will not strike a chord with you either, no pun intended. Lucky for me neither applies. Instead I am exactly the demographic this book was written for, down to the exact same birth year as the author.In fact, it reminded me of the days when I was blogging about music, my only payment being the music itself. While I was doing this, Smith was somewhere having actual success in the industry and for that I am jealous. Actually, I thought more of the book might share her professional journey as well, but I digress. Regardless, a lot of her specific musical milestones correlate with mine. For example, I remember having the same thoughts about the likes of Fiona Apple's anger and Elvis Costello's Veronica. In short, this book was made for me. Although our musical interests didn't always mesh, I completely related to Smith's take on music in general and as the author states, it's not really about what you like, but being willing and able to defend what you like. This book not only made me want to browse Smith's "record" collection, it made me want to get to know Smith. She tackles everything from movie soundtracks, to the art of the mix tape, to how older music helps us find new music and vice versa. There's even a chapter on owning up to guilty pleasures. Some might say reading this book and enjoying it so much was a guilty pleasure in itself, at least for me. True music nerds are a rare breed, often only understood or respected by other musical nerds. Perhaps that's what this book was for; the music nerd in all of us girls who remember true mix tapes like they were yesterday and who will always hold a special place for vinyl in their hearts.

I believe Kersten Hamilton is filling a void left by Diana Wynne Jones--with her own unique voice and point of view, of course. Many of the things I love about DWJ's books I find here: a large cast of characters, a sense of mutual love and affection among the characters, an unexpectedness of plot, joyful and surprising magic, and a sense of barely controlled chaos which makes her books such a fun rollercoaster to read. If you haven't read Tyger Tyger yet, move it to the top of your to-read pile so you'll be ready for book 2 when it comes out.

The art in this comic is amazing - entirely painted, and is worth 4 stars for that alone. The story isn't one of Bendis's best, it's still entertaining and is an important set-up for later events in the marvel universe.

Such a cute book. It was a very quick read and honestly I couldn't put it down. I relate a lot to Jenny. I was the shy one in junior high/high school. The one who wanted to be great at things, but was afraid to fail. The one who didn't realize the talent I had. I think this is a must read for any teen/pre-teen who is shy and has a dream. The ending of the story was so sweet and I think that ballet really needs to be produced :)
