Disturbing. Not my cup of tea, but creative and well-written.

the almost unbelievable story makes up for the writing, great easy read that hopefully brings more understanding or at least interest to wolves

What a strange, tall yarn! I did not see the ending coming at all. It makes me want to go back and re-read parts to see if I could have figured it out.

I wanted to comment on this book, which for many years, I have used almost daily. Before I became a Sibley devotee I was big on the Audubon guide. It's a toss up really, because the Audubon has real photographs and the Sibley has drawings-this made me resistant at first to changing over to the Sibley--but when I moved to New York I bought the East Coast version, and really grew to like it. That said, I really like the Audobon as well, but dislike where Audubon was coming from when he first started cataloging birds since he was essentially killing birds to be able to document them. Luckily for Sibley that kind of work is now not necessary. If you like looking at nature, isn't it great to figure out more about the thing you are admiring? I think so too.

So, it has been a very long time since I reviewed a book (since June 2009 to be exact), but I really feel that Lonesome Dove is so outstanding that I need to review it. If you were ever trying to decide what (approximately) 1000 page book to read, this one should be one of your first choices. The vividness with which McMurtry writes makes the characters come to life in a way that I cannot recall clearly from any other novel. I have to say, it is easy to develop an emotional attachment to certain characters that does not soon let go. The characters were what really got me about this book; there were so many, each unique and each seemed like a real person. By the end I wished I could just take Gus out of the story and have a conversation with him. One of my favorite things about the book straight from the beginning was the sly, almost hidden, humor. When some of the characters spoke with such frankness, especially Gus, I found myself laughing out loud. In the beginning, that humor enticed me enough to get to the point where I had to know what happened. It seemed that all 945 pages of the book read like that, just wanting to know what happened next, and hundreds of pages flew by in no time. Overall, I loved this book and recommend it to everyone (even if you aren't a fan of Westerns).

When I was in college, I read about two chemists that won a Nobel Prize in an experiment that culminated in creating amino acids from a methane test tube environment. I never lost sight of the significance of this achievement. In the 80's I was involved in Bible Study that included a reading of the Pentateuch. I never thought that the experiment of the Nobel prize winners was necessarily inconsistent with the creation story in Genesis. Years later I was drawn to the Unitarian Church by biographical information relating to Thomas Jefferson. McLennan identifies Jefferson as a Liberal Christian which makes sense to me. I think McLennan's book is required reading for those attempting to formulate a personal theology. I particularly appreciate McLennan's "proof for God" being based on his study of mathematical infinity. I also appreciate McLennan's presentation of a Liberal Christianity being based on rational and faith concepts. He refutes the idea that faith should be blind. McLennan presents love as the motive force in the universe and this is a theological reflection that strikes me as "Truth". McLennan's book is excellent and he presents a cogent rational approach to being a Christian. I think all persons have a hunger for the transcendent in our lives. Living a live entirely devoted to our own sensory pleasures and experiences is not enough. One of the other things I enjoyed about this book is McLennan postulates that indeed evolution may be "God". A thought provoking idea. In summary, I think this book is excellent and thought provoking and calls me onward to more fully explore the tenets of "Liberal" Christianity.
This is probably my favorite Jane Austen book. The love story seemed to be more realistic--not quite what I expected, and I really liked it.

I absolutely adore this series. This is how urban fantasy should be written.
