'To Be Sung Underwater' by Tom McNeal. I finished it this morning with great sadness. Yes, for I had to close the last pages and say goodbye to the characters I had found inside. That was like losing a part of my soul that sings a song as clear as the warbling of a meadowlark. The dictionary says that warbling is to sing or whistle with trills, quavers and melodic embellishments. 'To Be Sung Underwater' did just that with the story of a woman looking from the middle of her life at how she had ended up there. My heart heard the thrill of the love that had been sung in her early life. Hearing the lonesome call later in life trying to see if her soul mate was still out there. And ending in that every so quiet whistle of memories, desire and hope being just beyond reach, like where the dream fades and one wakes up to the reality of the day.

One of the best anti-war novels out there.

I owed someodd 50 goosebumps before I moved on. This one was my favorite. Probably read it 20 times.

Very weird, the culture was very different, but it was fun to read.

I have chased that white whale to the ends of the earth. It truly is all-consuming. Despite all of the detail about whaling and ship tending, I absolutely loved this book!

I hate gregory maguire for writing this book. He's milking the fame he got from Wicked. It had no ending and you're forced to by this next book. It's the Pirates of the Carribean II of literature -- it's a long PREVIEW to the third one!

This was one of those weird things where I didn't care much for the characters but found the book fairly readable. I was going through a very very hard personal time and found books extremely comforting. The writing is quite nice, with plenty of atmosphere, but it became tiresome to hear about Maisie's appearance; and it was even more tiresome that everything was done quickly. If I read that word one more time, I was going to scream. Thesaurus? How could an editor not pick that out and make some changes? But most difficult for me in reading this is that I couldn't connect to Maisie at all. I understand there's a class system, and the further back you go in history, the stronger its pull in England. Still, Maisie sure seems to have forgotten her roots. We are told how she lost her fiancé, a wealthy man she met in college, during WWI, but we are never quite told how Maisie managed to become such a snob. Highly unrecommended.

Un témoignage fort et indispensable, qui ne tombe jamais dans la pathos.

My all-time favorite young adult chick-lit series. It was already old when I read it as a high student in the 1970s, but it still seemed relevant to me. Dinny had the perfect balance between social grace and brainy nerdiness. I wanted to be her.
Great practical advice for any first time parent who wants to have some tools on hand in order to calm a fussy baby.
