This is the second go around for this book. Not only is Psalm 23 one of my favorite passages in the Bible - David Roper takes you beyond a glib recital of verse. He expounds on the analogies and metaphors within the Psalm - beautifully revealing God's love for us.

As a firm believer in the adage, “If all else fails, follow the directions,” I wouldn’t have anticipated finding this book useful. In fact, I tend to believe if I can’t muddle through it on my own, then I probably don’t need to know the answer. However, I actually used this book in order to Photoshop some images. On a whole, it gives instructions that even I can follow. Recommend for anyone who tweaks photos.

Heroine lets people walk all over her. I wanted more to the plot. STORY BRIEF: Izzy writes articles for her father’s travel magazine. Her hobby is playing tournament poker. She flies to Las Vegas to write about hotels and poker. Nick is famous for winning the poker championship three times. Izzy has had a crush on him for a while. When she meets him she falls on the floor, splits her skirt and loses her temporary front tooth. She’s embarrassed. He’s curious. Their paths keep crossing. He asks her out, but she won’t accept because she doesn’t want to be another notch on his belt. He is known for dating models and Barbie-doll types in quantity. He offers to help her with poker playing. She accepts and they spend time together. A romantic relationship is developing. There are a lot of card playing details in the book. Side stories include: After Izzy’s mother died her father married Jennifer, a Barbie-doll type. Jennifer insults Izzy and others throughout the book. Izzy’s former boyfriend also insults Izzy. REVIEWER’S OPINION: Parts of the story were pretty good, but other parts were drawn out and not interesting. I was annoyed with the following. Izzy was stupid to make two side bets with Phil. Because Phil cheated (which Izzy should have expected) she lost both bets, forcing her to do stupid things. One was that Phil would tell people they slept together and she had to say it was true and keep up the lie for 24 hours. Of course the reader knows Phil will use that comment during the poker tournament to unsettle Nick at the worst time. Another uninteresting conflict was Nick and Izzy arguing over who could last longer without sex. So they have no sex for a while, and both are frustrated. That took several pages. There were a lot of sex scenes, some in front of other people. Sex scenes were ok, but I didn’t feel anything. In the beginning and for a good part of the story, Izzy is frequently insulted and accepts it. She lets everyone walk all over her. For example: she’s cooking with her mother’s recipes. Jennifer walks in and adds undesirable spices. Izzy says nothing. The bartender repeatedly gives her different drinks than what she asks for. She accepts the drinks and tips him. She doesn’t send them back. Am I supposed to feel sorry for her? I didn’t. Was I chuckling over this? No. Poker players might enjoy the story more than I did. There are a lot of poker terms that didn’t mean anything to me. It’s told in first person with point of view changes. The author did a few chapters in Izzy’s mind and then a few in Nick’s mind. When she switched to Nick’s mind, I was frequently confused. It was hard to remember that “I” was him not her. I usually like POV changes because I want to know what’s going on in others’ minds. But somehow this didn’t flow well. DATA: Story length: 415 pages. Swearing language: strong, including religious swear words. Sexual language: strong. Number of sex scenes: 13. Estimated number of sex scene pages: 29. Setting: current day mostly Pittsburgh and Las Vegas. Copyright: 2010. Genre: erotic contemporary romance.
I actually liked this book a lot more than I thought I did. Yes, Evie was at times annoying - what with her obsession of everything pink. But she was, in all main purposes, a teenager. She worried about normal teenage things. She cared that the world was going to shit, but not more than going to the prom with her new found boyfriend. The mystery surrounding Evie kept pretty strong throughout the book. I was piecing together her background kept me guessing for awhile. There were still unanswered questions that I'm hoping the author answers in the sequels. And can I just say, loved Lend. Loved that he wasn't a perfect boyfriend. He was just as confused by everything as Evie - and as equally as insecure. Their relationship was adorable.
Timeless Classics.

WWZ has a very unique and well thought out approach to the zombie canon. Max Brooks introduces concepts and ideas most others never even considered. A must read and a must make for the big screen.
Herman Melville also wrote about this same place and coined the name "the noble savage" in his book Typee. After almost a century his book continues to be debated to this day by literary scholars who argue about what these people were actually like and if this was one of his better books. I find Land of Men to be interesting from two perspectives. The authors painstaking effort at researching their past practices and incorporating these into the story deserves no less than praise. The second point I wish to make is that his characters each appear to represent something much deeper than as first introduced to us. The protagonist and his lover helps us understand that good and evil can be camouflaged in western moral and ethical values not shared by other cultures. The question of destiny and changing it raises even more fasciinating questions. If I were a French Catholic missionary I might even be offended by this novel. I find a universal spiritual thread that winds itself throughout the story and holds everything together. It was only when I was more than half way through the novel did I realize the author was presenting to us his own values in life. Maybe because I have a love for sailing myself I can understand how a love of the sea can blind a persons perception of the world and of his own life. He can become compelled to leave everything behind in order to contemplate his own existence. I found this novel to be spiritual, romantic, intriguing, captivating, and definitely entertaining and very well written. It is a mix of fantasy, and reality that keeps the reader interested and yearning for more. My criticism of the book is that at times it can be somewhat confusing. Because the story is so intriguing and entertaining it helped me overlook any shortcomings in the authors literary style. I'm hoping there will be a second book that picks up where this one leaves off. Tasha

This series is really good, but I thought the second book was best. It has the most emotional conflict, which to me is always a recipe for greatness.

I really loved it. It made me think about literature and why it's important, and about the power and importance of ideas.
