3.5 if I could...a fun read--a very original book. The author obviously loves words and does some really innovative things with them ("sweet buttery Jesus!"). There is also a great mix of comedy and humanity that runs throughout, making Funk Ninja a more multidimensional character than he might have been in the hands of a less skilled writer. I enjoyed all the asides about things and people he accidentally killed,"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" episode references, the fact that rubbing a strange cat's furry belly cheered him up, and other similar details peppered throughout. Liked the ending. Criticism: I would have liked to hear more about Funk Ninja's days as a young monk and history with Keiko as well as knowing more details about her character. I got how much he loved her and her effect on his life--which was really compelling--but I would have liked to see it fleshed out a bit more. Maybe in a sequel? :o)

I hate to give the genius Milan Kundera 2 stars... But I just finished this book and it's still fresh in my memory. Where the sex plots are interesting in Immortality, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, and Life is Elsewhere (to name a few), the opposite goes for this book.. Not that I'm reading it for the sex plots. But I'd be too embarrassed to recommend this book solely because of them. The sexual stories are a little odd. And somehow, I have a feeling that that funny little genius Kundera is sitting back, drinking rum, and laughing at us for going with the grain and saying that this book somehow relates to something larger and abstract.

I stayed home "sick" from work to finish this book, that's how good it was. Opera and terrorism, two great tastes that taste great together, and she makes it work. I read this right after "The Go-Between" and I've never read to such great books in a row before.
