Going through this slowly. Some basic tips about how to be a gentleman. Nothing too terribly surprising.

good book
Yes, I read it. About 10 times, once each year for 10 years. If you can't tell, it's one of my favorite books of all time. Why? Because this writer is a master of mythic symbolism. I always thought it was weird that they made this into a movie for kids, and watching the movie as an adult, I think it's even more strange. God love them.

Liked this book a lot but at the same time struggled through the length.

This book takes in place in two parts, though they're not officially seperated by Gaarder. The first is a narrative of a girl, Sophie, about to turn 15, who is very interested in philosophy, but doesn't know much about it. Her story, the novel, moves into the second part, a lesson by mail on the history of philosophy, before moving back to the first, where Sophie takes what she's learned, and along with her teacher, puts it into practice in her everyday world for some drastic metaphysical consequences. It's an excellent read, but a little difficult to get through in the middle if you though this was just going to be some light entertaining reading. I'd reccomend it to anyone who thinks they might be interested.
This book was well-written, in that the prose was clear, readable, and beautiful in its own way. That said, I really can't recommend this book. All the accusations about name-dropping with musicians and food is accurate, but basically, you have here a nearly plotless book about two people who love each other and don't seem to change all that much. Clare particularly is frustrating as some kind of cross between a Stepford Wife and Patient Greselda. We are told they have emotional problems, but it never comes out in the story. Small plot ideas are mentioned in one chapter then forgotten about. In fact, much of the book seems to be rather randomly paced. Neither character's life is told in any resemblance of chronological order, and while that is appropriate for a time-traveler's story, it doesn't add much to the narrative as a whole when past experiences that don't seem to add up to much pop up seemingly at random.

Very engaging and readable. I learned a bit in the process. Some aspects were a bit exaggerated.
Definitely good for the kids who have read all the Wimpy Kid books and don't know what to read next. Funny, although there are a few girls in this one...
