Dry as dust hodgpodge on a fascinating subject. You have to stink pretty bad to make LIncoln dull. I didn't like the news clippings style of organizing the book. It was ugly to look at.

Very slow. Not her best book. I don't know why the main character couldn't catch a break, I would have like to see at least one good thing other than her daughter or becoming a physician happen to her.

Definitely my all-time favourite children's story. Growing up I bought it whenever I found it second hand somewhere and ended up with over 10 copies although I've now reduced that to 2, haha. A beautiful story that, as a child I definitely felt I could identify with for some reason (though I've never been a slave or a daughter of a soldier etc etc) and I read it over and over. I was so insanely excited to find it for my kindle.

I guess that this has all the elements that I love about Shojo. It's romantic, funny with a bit of drama and slice of life. Also you'll learn a lot about classical music.

so, i don't know why, but this tess story made me almost cry. (well, i do know why, but it's a spoiler, and it deserves to stay one, but needless to say naming the pregnant it inside tess is actually really touching.) i feel like this also hit a point in my life, where i am - i don't really want to get married, but i'm in a committed relationship, i like my life, but then when people start asking questions and you start to realize that everything happened by accident, you wonder what the future holds. so it's a nod to rear window and a nod to The Daughter of Time, but it's tess' story all the way. there's a fashionable girl walking her italian greyhound by tess's window every day, talking on her cell phone, with everything in green. one day, tess sees the dog running alone. and so begins the story, which works especially well because all fans of tess monaghan know about her overactive imagination. there are return characters here - whitney, crow, an absent but still present aunt kitty, mrs. blossom. and for the first time, we get a few chapters from whitney's POV. while i continue to love whitney, i don't know if her chapters were my favorite part. there were little bits that made me think, oh, this is fabulous! and then there was the bigger part of me that wanted more of tess - her frustrations, her worrying, her gnawing at every bone she can put her hands on. but i do think it worked for the structure of this novella - it was released as a serial in the new york times magazine, so each chapter had to both stand alone and develop the plot. this is why the changing perspectives worked so well. and while i am left with a lingering sense of "BUT I WANT MOOOOORE", i must admit that this is a tightly woven, crisp story with a strong sense of character development and a beautiful addition to the tess series. as lippman says, tess has come full circle here, with her marble composition books, to the beginning of Baltimore Blues and her life is so different. the writing is elegant, the characters are true to form, and i love tess and her motley crew so much.

Powerful, urgent and hugely thought provoking, once you read this book you will never forget it. I cannot fault this book at all, I have read it 3 times and it improves with each reading. A thriller that will actually expand your brain and change your view of humanity and History. Also, this book is crying out to be made into a huge, dark, multi-Oscar winning film on a scale of Schindlers List or Munich, and why no hugely famous director (eg. Spielberg) has not snatched it up yet is quite beyond me.
