Good one too! As must read after Wicked!
This was bittersweet for me. Nobody likes the humanization of an icon, and that's what "When Nothing Else Matters" truly is. This is the new millenium "Jordan Rules" - a story of a misunderstood superstar who actually struggles with ego and age. I've heard the stories time and again about Jordan's attitude towards his teammates, coaches, the media and PR people, etc. And it's about time to realize that while he was the greatest athlete in the era of sports marketing, a God to so many dreamers, he struggles with life, too. Leahy (the author) writes for the Post and was banned from locker rooms for several seasons following this book's publishing. For a Jordan fan, read it. For a sports fan, maybe give it a shot. Or don't.
4.5 stars. My sister really liked this book, and mentioned it several times, so I finally picked it up from my too large stack of library books and started it. I read it in two sittings within twenty-four hours. So, yeah, I liked it too. :) The voice was different from most YA paranormals, more unique. It actually took a long time for the main character, Jessica, to discover the truth (re: Werewolves exist! Eek!)--it was in the last maybe quarter of the book, so in that aspect it was kind of slow moving, but the story was fast paced and kept me wanting to know what was going to happen next. Jessica's penchant for vampire novels was funny, especially when it seemed like everyone around her was reading classics and only classics. Sigh. The ending was rather cliffhangery, and from what I understand the second book in the series is worse. I'm developing a great respect for authors who can end a book in a series with closure, wrapping up the book's storyline, but still leave the reader wanting more.

I didn't especially love this book, mainly because it was just something different from anything I had ever read before. However, I did like it. It was a very deep and symbolic book, that took place in the future and showed what the world would be like without any books. A world where personal education was forbidden. The only kind that was allowed was the one approved by the government. It was really interesting and i would probably enjoy it more if I read it a second time.

Vivid detail of historical perfume processes, cached in a compelling, highly surrealistic story. Holds together until the end.

As a sports fan, fantasy baseball player, and reader, this book was right up my alley. Smart, well-written, and surprisingly funny - I loved every minute of it.

Like really excellent candy covered in razorblades and brain matter, Battle Royale is so horrifyingly delicious that I read it with something bordering on fervor. While I typically shy away from translations after a few wobbly experiences in the past, I flew through this murdery tome in record time and with real excitement. If you liked The Hunger Games trilogy, you will love the original kids-killing-kids-in-an-epic-government-controlled-bloodbath, Battle Royale. Check out the film adaptation as well - really good stuff!
I liked The Time Traveler's Wife. It fed my soul and broke my heart and was complicated and one had to pay attention to know what TIME it is. It was long, but I was sick. It took a few starts to take it on because it's huge, and for some reason I was sure he was going to get lost in the time continum and not get back to her, and she was always keeping hope alive, patiently. I couldn't read it again for love or money, but I think about it still.

I first read the Foundation Trilogy about twenty-five years ago, and have been eager to return. Asimov's series is set 50,000+ years in the future, when humanity consists of quadrillions of people living in a great galaxy-spanning empire. The mathematician Hari Seldon invents psychohistory, allowing him to predict the future course of mass movements in history. He creates a pair of storehouses of human civilization, the Foundations, to mitigate the effects of the coming fall of the Galactic Empire his calculations predict. We follow the Foundations through centuries on their way to hastening the coming of the Second Galactic Empire. Reading the book again, I can see the benefit of having gained a high-level outline of the history of the Romans that I lacked last time I read the books. The broad themes and some specific characters from the history of the Roman Empire provided some of Asimov's inspiration. I was also amused by the somewhat dated take on the far future from Asimov (Foundation was written in 1951). Messages are delivered printed and wrapped in capsules, newspapers are widely circulated, information and media are passed around on microtape that must be threaded though a viewer and smoking is quite common, with ashtrays (that disintegrate ashes) a common household fixture. Still a great read that captures the imagination.
Despite the fact that it doesn't have anything to do with the "real" meaning of Christmas, I love this book. I love how the people of Whoville overcome their materialism to celebrate Christmas together with genuine feeling and goodwill.
