I decided to leave the realm of non-fiction for a few weeks and find a good novel to sink into- this was the perfect one. It's a quick read loosely based on historical events and wrapped up in a wonderful story of love and friendship! I'd highly recommend it!!

3.5 stars. This book's great characters were marred by some seriously repetitive phrasing problems. This author usually has down-to-earth, easy to relate to plots, great characters, and good dialogue, but with HORRIBLY repetitive internal dialogue and emotional descriptions from characters (in this book, the knot in Jinx's stomach that was repeated on nearly every page). Like most of her books, I found this a fun and enjoyable read, but the writing holds it back from making four or five stars.

I really wanted to like this book but it made me want to scratch my skin off. You know that dirty feeling you get from some books and movies? It has nothing to do with how sad or depressing the narrative is. It's something else, deeper and sicker.

I read half of this book, then had to leave it behind because of a sudden trip home. I kept meaning to start it again but never have; I liked it all right while I was reading, but felt no urgency about it.

Reading this book is like taking a very long, long drink of water. The entire thing is a letter written from a father to his young son, and there are no chapter breaks. The plot, such as it is, builds up in slow, minute increments. Still, you can't help being drawn into the simplicity and clarity of the narrator's voice. "I've developed a great reputation for wisdom," he says, "by ordering more books than I ever had time to read, and reading more books, by far, than I learned anything useful from." That made me wonder about how much I've really learned from all the books I've read. Another beautiful quote (the narrator being a preacher, the book is full of sentences like these): "Love is holy because it is like grace -- the worthiness of its object is never really what matters."

** spoiler alert ** October 9, 2008 Dear Ishmael Beah, A Long Way Gone has showed me that war isn’t just, “Bang! I shot you. You’re dead. We win.” Your story taught me that war is much more complex. It doesn’t just affect the soldiers but the citizens of the country as well. I didn’t realize that war could be so gruesome, sad, and terrifying until I read your memoir. As I progressed through the book, it seemed as if there was no chance of survival. Every page made the war seem more and more nightmarish. I am 12 years old, just like you were when you started your journey through Sierra Leone. This personal connection had a big impact on me. I can’t imagine what it would be like to have adults not be able to trust you. I can’t believe those villagers tied you up for asking directions because they thought you were a rebel! I never thought that people could go from caring and nice to suspicious that anyone, even a child, was an enemy or worse, a killer. While reading your book, I had a jumble of feelings about the war and what happened to you. Out of all of those feelings, I felt mostly sadness. I would have cried so hard and probably have given up if I’d found out my family had died right before I was about to be reunited with them. I can’t imagine what it would be like without my parents. Many times in the book, I thought about what I would have done if I were in a similar position. I decided that I would mostly be scared and angry. I’d be angry that people would wish such things upon others. When your friend Kaloko was too afraid to leave one of the villages, I probably would have agreed with him and stayed too. I wonder what happened to him? Do you ever think about that? Do you wish you’d convinced him to continue the journey with you? I am grateful that I don’t have to go through what you did and that I live in such a safe country with a loving family. Sincerely, Ian Sherman

Spit-out-your-drink funny, drolly offensive, and utterly charming. Written with perfect comedic pitch, it's considerably better than any movie he's made since Divine's passing.
