This book is probably of far more interest to someone with a legal background, and specifically someone with an interest in securities law and litigation. That isn't to say it's not entertaining, but the authors have more or less written a history of how the securities laws have evolved since the 1970s through the lens of the most infamous securities class action lawyer from that period. Unless you're taken by the discussions of politics and policy that pervade the narrative, it will generally read like a run-of-the-mill "spectacular rise and fall of X personality" story.

Still reading, and I've heard his others are better, London in particular. I've always been fascinated by Ireland though so I picked this one up first. The book spans so many years, yet still ties in the same families, which is very interesting.

This book is absurd and fun. Set in Barcelona. Basically the plot goes: writer type leads meaningless existence. Writer type meets girl. Girl and boy fall in love. Girl's father turns out to be crazy cult leader who thinks he's the reincarnation of a long dead religious fanatic. Cult leader kidnaps writer type and girl. There's also a prophetic fire eater and people who live on the roof. I'd love it but the author sort of cops out at the end and goes for the romantic ending.

I was very much prepared to hate this book for a roundabout reason. I've always had a great disdain for John Cusack, he was in High Fidelity which I continue to boycott to this bloody day, which was a book originally written by Nick Hornby. I continue to boycott the movie version of this novel for a similar disdain for Hugh Grant, but the book was halfway decent. There's an especially funny part where the kid watches the movie "Groundhog Day" with his mom who was recently released from the hospital for trying to commit suicide; and he goes ballistic when Bill Murray's character starts jumping off of buildings. Nevertheless, the book ties in Kurt Cobain's suicide into the real-time events and I think it's cheap, hacky, and bogus.
Certainly a page turner!! An eerily haunting story about a small town and the private school that is at it's center. So many lives intertwined. A rather backward boy who flirts with a beautiful girl, an oddly strange photographer who is engaged to a terribly odd and boring teacher and the cop who must solve the mystery of the body that was found in the river. This was an intriguing book with a little of everything in it. Ghostly, friendships, eccentricity, love, mystery, wonderment!

I did not enjoy this book, pretty much right from page 1. I love a really good romance, but this wasn't it. This was a giant love quadrangle, a real soap opera. Actual romance development was very minimal, and the cross-currents were so morally repugnant to me that I was unable to empathize much with the two leads. Second, the total lack of description of the surroundings stranded me in a blank white space for basically the entire book. I really love to get a good feel for the setting and people in a story, and this one was completely lacking. This was most noticeable when the family moved to Ireland. There was a brief mention of green seen from the deck of the ship, but that's it, white space the whole way. Third, the treatment of the religious element in this book kept taking me out of the story. I don't believe it is historically accurate to confuse typical Protestant behavior with typical Catholic behavior, not at the time the story takes place, during World War 1. I would have to say the characters' Catholicism is very modern evangelical Catholic.

Very short story, really too short to get invested into the characters.
