So far its excellent ... just a slow read. I'm not very far into this book, but its fairly easy to read (for a biography) and discusses key issues/events in the partition of India (including Gandhi's civil disobedience movement). Strong underlying theme: development of nationalism, and the struggles of the independence movement of India.

Some swearing (including a handful of F bombs) and some sexuality I could have done without, led to the three star rating of this book that I couldn't put down. I cried for the entire last chapter. I don't know that it is nearly as good as BEACHES (what is often compared to in reviews) but it was good.
Out Jodi-Picoults Jodi Picoult. This book is so piercingly & beautifully written, it makes me want to get in touch with my Inner Bad Poet and come up with cringingly embarrasing similes, like how it is as wonderful, subtle and striking as a stretch of barbed wire snagged with raindrops, inviting gasps of wonder & awe & pain all at once. Maybe I should just get in touch with a therapist instead.

I got some strange looks on the T while reading this book. This book is a smart, witty and sarcastic fictionalized account of Jesus's life. It wasn't as Laugh Out Loud funny as Christopher Moore's "Lamb" (which is still one of my favorite books), but there were some parts that made me grin. In this book, Jesus is depicted as an unwilling martyr who rebels against God's selfish choice to (paraphrashing here...) use him for His own purposes.
This book ultimately amounts to a collection of short stories, that are okay at best. If they characters had been interwoven a little more with some sort of plot, it could have been an entertaining read. As it is written, however, it falls way short and felt like a chore to finish.

Beautifully written! The back story is magically woven into the main plot - it alone would have kept me turning the pages. I'm a sucker for "true love" and this delivered, but not in a mushy, gushy sort of way. It was happily ever after without being perfect ever after. I'm fighting the urge to pick up the next book - not much got accomplished here the last 2 days! Note: This is an adult fiction book and such has more adult themes including violence, sex, and languege. I wouldn't recommened it for my teenagers.

For review from Scholastic UK! The Scorpio Races is Maggie Stiefvater at her very best; beautiful, powerful, and terrifying. The Scorpio Races stands solo amongst Stiefvater’s previous works, and her breathtaking lyrical prose continues to makes my head spin. The characters that she has created are like no others, and their story is so passionate and alive; like I can feel the sand between my toes, the thump of my heartbeat, Puck’s hair between my fingers. Like Stiefvater’s previous novels, the Scorpio Races is told from alternating perspectives. This time, the story is told by Sean, and by Puck. The Scorpio Races is written in such a wonderful way that you receive two very different lives. In the beginning, there is no physical interaction between the two; nothing but whispers of names and stolen glances across the crowds. Their relationship, as it develops, is wonderfully sweet and genuine. I love these characters, well and truly. My favourite scenes were those between loved ones. And I adored Puck’s younger brother, Finn. I had so many teary moments. But not sad tears; I was crying the oh-my-goodness-this-is-so-lovely-how-can-one-author-be-so-marvellous kind of tears. And when I finally got to the end, there was such a feeling of love and completeness. I’m so proud to hold this book so close to my heart. "May the ocean keep our brave."
A lot of people have called this the best of the series. I think I know why. This is what I call a 'Pay Off' book. Butcher has spent 8 books weaving small details of a larger plot together. Never have I felt unsatisfied by the small bits of information Dresden puts together, but it's nice to have a small pittance of the questions that have come up finally answered. That's not to say it's not awesome without it, but there's something infinitively satisfying about getting answers, even if they only open up more questions. I hate when writers string you along forever, never telling you the Big Secret. I prefer my Big Secrets to be revealed and the move onto the next one. That's not to say there isn't a Big Secret still to be seen, but Butcher is more than happy to show that we are moving towards it apace. I'd say a hearty thumbs up to this book, well worth the slow beginning I had with this series. Butcher continues to remember that not only does time pass, but things CHANGE when it does. It's refreshing in some ways that I haven't seen before. The plot, without spoiling, isn't predictable, even when it is, and solves dangling threads I didn't expect. Dresden is reaching full circle in some ways here and I can't wait to see what's next.
I am generally a Kundera fan, but this book read more like the work of someone who was trying to imitate Kundera than the real thing. It seems that sometimes when authors age they become almost parodies of themselves. I sort of wish that I had just re-read The Unbearable Lightness of Being, to be honest.
