I picked this book up on the Belize Island of Caye Caulker at a really cool organic coffee shop/art salon/healing center known as 'Coco Plum'. The owner Destino with her glowing eyes recommended it to me and after grazing through the pages I knew I had to have it. I'm personally fascinated by Mayan 'Curanderos' or healers who for thousands of years have learned how to heal, vitalize, and balance the human vessel via natural remedies found in the forests of Central America. This particular book hit close to home since the healer known as Don Elijio lived just minutes from San Ignacio, Belize where I've spent much time and where I'm also involved in a project called 'The Vision Exchange'. Not only does the author Rosita provide useful medicinal information she also livens up the spirit of those searching for NATURAL remedies in a world filled with pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and basically junk. My bet is that you'll read this one in one sitting or at least in a few days. It's very hard to put down ;)

I really like this guide-- it is detailed enough to provide weeks of new and exciting things to see, even for an extended stay. I literally read it cover to cover, which should be an indicator of its goodness (or my nerdiness).

Very fun, clever mystery set in about 1950 in England. Flavia de Luce is the 11 year old, diabolically intelligent & precocious protagonist, busy conducting poisonous chemistry experiments on her disdainful older sisters concocted in her lab in her family's crumbling mansion. The mystery ensues with a dead snipe with a stamp stuck in its beak at the kitchen door, a late night argument between her father and a stranger, and an expiring body in the cucumber patch which Flavia discovers in the early morning. The local inspector arrests her father, and Flavia's investigation into philately, the connections between village characters and her father's primary school alma mater, and her poison experiments are as irresistible as she is.

The Pianoplayers explores the intriguing idea of a creative impulse which seeks expression through multiple generations of a family. Burgess' writing is saturated with musical references and displays an absolutely dead-on understanding of what it means to be a musician - sans the romanticized fluff that could so easily be attached to such a story. He writes with a dark humor that is somewhat akin to Vonnegut's sensibility, though somewhat subtler. Pianoplayers trades heavily on gender roles and sexual mores - sometimes nearly to the point of proselytizing - but rather than detracting from the novel, this is used as a unifying theme and an interesting parallel to musical expression. A great read, and, as much as I love A Clockwork Orange, a more finely-crafted novel than some of Burgess' better known works.

An enjoyable, heartwarming story of the first two years, two months, and two days in the life of a modern Southern marriage. Raney is a small-town Baptist. Charles is a liberal from Atlanta. And Raney is the story of their marriage. Charming, wise, funny and truthful, it is a novel for everyone to love.

I heart barack obama. Obama wrote this book after being elected editor of the harvard law review (first black editor) so it is him speaking from his pre-political voice. What results is a (if sometimes a bit flowery) lovely book about an individuals journey to find a racial and personal identity. Obama's own background is fascinating - son of a white mother and black african kenyan father who meet when the dad is studying at university of hawaii....obama grows up in hawaii and Indonesia, then after college goes to chicago's south side to work as a community organizer amongst the urban (black) poor. Throughout this book he is trying to figure out his place within the politics of race relations in america (and kenya) and is also trying to understand the father he never really knew. Ends with him traveling to Kenya to meet his half brothers/sisters and family there after the death of his father (sort of a Roots-type experience). The book was rather candid and i totally related to him - which is so rare when considering politicians (LOVE that he is not an old white man).

be ready to contemplate language if you are reading this book. Many allusions to literature, politics and colloquialisms that are no longer around. An amazing read being that it was written thousands of years ago.
