we meet a beleagured husband of three bickkering wives (and posssibly 26 children) who become more and more demanding of him. As he leaves his mistress and a week of working on the road, he finds himself at a crossroads. The book finds him questioning how he feels about his family, job, children and lifestyle through a critical eye. There is humor in some of the situations he finds himself, but mostly we follow his jagged journey as he makes several wrong turns to a final conclusion. It took a while for me to get into the story and sort out the characters. The book picked up for me after that and I in turns found myself, sympathizing, criticizing and confused by the main character. I look forward to reading other revietws for another perspective.

Interesting character book which kept me reading everynight. It is very depressing and left me feeling restless when I was finished. It is unnerving to think about the sequence of events and how they could of happened in anyone's life.

This was Heather and Jean-Luc's story. It was very cute. All of this series stories are cute. It's nice to have something light to read.

I read the series, from the first to the last, since all my kids had done it in 6th grade, and Savannah was the last one to do it. I thought I had better see what all the fuss was about. They were really fun.

This book has a very circumscribed focus, but if you are interested in how French and American poetry have been talking to each other the past approximately 150 years, it's a beautiful little monograph which will slake that curiosity and give you many avenues of future research, and point you towards little-known classic lit mags of great collectibility. Reproductions of magazines known for great literature and stellar design abound. The interviews with the translators about process, intent, beliefs, etc. are often quite amusing and their answers are often surprisingly quirky. There is an error here in this listing. It states the book was written and edited by Guy Bennett and John Ashbery. Ashbery is in here, but the book was written and edited by Bennett and Beatrice Mousli.
A corrosive personal account of Iraq and Afghanistan. Dexter Filkins has seen some bad things. In The Forever War, he pours his demons out on the page to confound our opinions about American involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan. Do not read this for inspiration - Filkins unflinchingly relates the failures, missed opportunities and senseless death that have accompanied both US invasions. Filkins recounts how well-intended US soldiers harden into men who throw unarmed prisoners into the Tigris river. How noble Iraqis, heedless of their own safety, defy death squads to rebuild their country - and are exterminated almost without exception. Seeing the vast complexity of what the idea of victory is up against is educational - even thrilling. But all logical inferences that result point to a future that is darker than most of us feel comfortable thinking about.

For me, this second in the Books by the Bay series really delivered the goods because along with interesting resolution of the crime, I found out a more about Olivia Limoges, the central character. Haviland, Olivia's dog, continues to charm me. He's not there to solve the crime, he's just there to be there when needed--which is all anyone should ask of a cherished pet.

I was really excited when I first heard that Stephen King was compiling a book about his favorite short stories that have been turned into films. I hoped and prayed for something that was a cross between On Writing and the ever so classic and insightful Danse Macabre -- but alas, what King fans get is a reprinting of five previously published stories. Once I got over my initial (crushing) disappointment, I realized that the old stories are at least introduced by King, and these short intros are new. So at least that's something. Furthermore, the five stories he has selected are oldies but goodies, as the saying goes. Readers unfamiliar with King's shorter works now have a chance to see that not everything the master writes is of door-stop length. When he has a mind to, King can embrace shorter but sweeter and do a fine job. Anyone who hasn't read Rita Hayworth & the Shawshank Redemption is in for a real treat. If you haven't seen Frank Darabont's adaptation starring Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins rent it tonight! You won't regret it. It's wonderful, and not horror, but dramatic and sad and beautiful and hopeful.

I grew up having this book for my nightstand and I still love the short stories in both Winnie-the-Pooh and The House on Pooh Corner. A fun, light read that shouldn't be over analyzed or over thought. If you need a cheering up, this book is perfect.

Ok, I just finished it, and I think I really liked it. Good advice (and recipes) as to how to avoid the pitfall of thinking you have to eat nothing to lose weight.
