I have this book on audio CD read by the author. He is both a wonderful writer and an excellent narrator. I'm sure we'll hear a lot more from him. He's seems to be fairly bursting with fresh ideas, and a new, and uniquely insightful point of view. In this book, Gladwell, a masterful synthesist, skillfully draws from a wide range of fields to support his characteristically intriguing conclusions. He reveals and provides insight into the mostly unconscious mental process by which we actually make most of our important decisions, for which he uses the term "thin-slicing", a skill that can be developed, and at which certain individuals demonstrate exceptionally keen natural acumen, applying it in a wide variety of dissimilar fields. The term thin-slicing was coined by psychologists (led by people like Robert Rosenthal and Nalina Ambady) who were interested in the human tendency to draw conclusions about situations and people based on very "thin slices" of experience. He's also written another book called "The Tipping Point" about how ideas are disseminated through social groups, and populations in general. Here he provides a fascinating explanation of sudden social changes and the development of the fast chains of information that effect a variety of vastly disparate trend patterns. He postulates that they spread in a manner similar to the way in which viruses spread, with implications as to both the controlling and spreading of ideas. This makes sense when you realize that virus cells are made up almost entirely of information in the form of DNA. He's got another book called "Spreading the Idea Virus" which is on my list to read soon.

This book is an instant hook. I wanted to keep reading it even after the last page, especially since it ended the way it did, so open ended. Sequel perhaps? I loved how the book was broken up into the different points of view. Saffron, Emer, Fred, and of course the dogs. I enjoyed reading Emer's story primarily because, well, who doesn't love pirates, especially kick ass female pirate like Emer. She is such a ferociously tough character that you are instantly compelled to root for her. Emer and Saffron are the same, but different. Saffron's a teenager that's never had to fight. She's tough in her own way: she knows what she wants, what she needs, and knows what's best for her and her family. She doesn't stand for any crap from people, even from her own family. Emer's headstrong swashbuckling persona peeks through in moments when Saffron's at her worst, filled with annoyance or hatred. Where Saffron is relatable to teenagers today, Emer is relatable to everyone who seeks adventure. Who doesn't want to be a pirate for a day? Emer's one of those characters where you can't get enough of. I found myself living through her, murdering and pillaging ships. She's a survivor through and through and stands for hope when love seems lost. I admire AS King for her effortless writing, masterfully sewing Saffron and Emer together, making their story one, even though the characters are far apart. I enjoyed Saffron's journey back to Jamaica with her shovel to dig up her loot, yet it left me heartbroken and sad, even after a sudden turn of events on the last page. I wanted that true happy ending. And while some may argue she got it, I wanted to read it. My only problem... not enough romance perhaps. I wanted more of Seanie. H came and went too quickly.Overall it is a fast paced, well narrated, heartbreaking, tender and filled with heightened emotion. This book has so many layers, so many wonderfully place details and such intriguing characters that I will without a doubt reread this.

I'm pretty sure I don't care what anyone else says when I state my opinion that this book is amazing. It's about 2 teenagers who are in love and they run into trouble with a rich boy who has a crazy powerful father. I shant disclose any information but I can say that the book isn't "lovey-dovey" and it's not for the faint of heart in a sense if you're looking for a happily ever after. It's heartbreaking and tragic when you read it and your heart breaks for them because everyone wants a love story to work out. The point is that Jason writes so breathtakingly well that you want a happily ever after because their lives have gone through so much already that they deserve a fairy tale ending. He really makes one aware of how people are on this earth and what people should approach with caution about. He writes the ugly stuff and it's so rough around the edges that it's hard to put it down. His books are nothing less than addicting and if you enjoy teen angst and true love and all of that, this book is for you. It's real and it's not pretty, the story is ugly and doesn't have a happy ending but it's worth the time to read. Nothing is sugar coated and as long as you don't mind the F-bomb a lot and some inappropriate words like "pussy" and what not, it's just things that can be overlooked. The story has loads of violence but I feel like it just adds to the story line and pulls you in further. You won't be disappointed with this book!
