Classic and spooky.

If it weren't for the special place in my heart reserved for To Kill a Mockingbird, I would probably place Poisonwood atop my list of favorite books. This book did for me in college what TKAM did in elementary school: heightened my awareness of injustice and opened up a whole new world of thought. It is a thoroughly witty indictment of patriarchy, evangelism, and greed. Gripping and heartbreaking, it taught me for the first time that while there are wonderful things about America, our free and abundant way of life has consequences across the globe - and our leaders don't always have the best of intentions.

One of the most uninteresting books I've ever tried to read. I was getting through it until he felt compelled to bring in a rape. Then I set it down. I will not finish it.

Excellent story about a society where all children are born "ugly" and as a teenager undergo surgery to make them "pretty," and about the rogues who escape and try to live away from these rules.

this book is not written in the greatest prose, it is not pretty but how much can you expect from a porn star barring all? (In her memory and mind that is.) I remember I flew through this book amazed at Jenna's self awareness and candid and strong sense of self. She takes her role as sex object and raises the bar.

This book was a lot darker than the previous books. I liked the outcome. The last chapter was a little confusing though. I was trying to figure out who the "old ones" were speaking too. Oh well, I'm sure it will be explained in the next book.
What a surprise! Once you get used to the strangely washed out colours of this graphic novel, you realize that the colour is essential to the theme. There is a deep pathos running throughout the story, but at the same time it doesn't allow the reader or its character to fall into abject hopelessness. The last frame will leave lots of discussion for those who've read it! The dream sequence that mirrored the journey of Orpheus and Eurydice was perfect.
This took me over a year to read. I'm not exactly sure what my problem was - perhaps I find Peterson's writing slow at times, or more likely it's my lack of focus. There are moments in this so-called "conversation" that sent me reeling (in a good way), while other sections left me struggling to complete a paragraph. It's final epilogue sets up the rest of the series (5 books in the end), and anticipates the zenith of the series, The Jesus Way (book 3).
To journey through this particular series is to know a part of the author's soul. For me, reading Sandman was an intimate experience with more than a few personal epiphanies. This series is an epic and proves that, yes, Neil Gaiman has just always been that good.

Sweet and creative. I especially loved the very last illustration.
