Enjoyable travel essays from Bill Bryson. Not quite as humorous and charming as A Walk in the Woods, but Anglophiles will enjoy the ride through the UK. Includes the usual Bryson humor and dry cracks at the frustrations of traveling alone.

Quietly compelling, gorgeous prose. The romance is larger than the romance - it's a romance in the old-fashioned sense of the word, a grand adventure, at the same time as it clings to the small and inconsequential of the everyday. An excellent blend of the grand and epic and the banal and human, with incredible characters and a compelling story played out on a tiny stage.

Beautiful cover, but unfortunately it all goes downhill from there. This is honestly one of the worst books that I've ever read. It's an even worse version of Twilight, but other than that has no plot to speak of. It's self-indulgent, with unrealistic characters that are absurdly annoying. I'm really shocked that this made it to print and even more shocked that I actually managed to finish it (I have a rule - once I start a book I have to finish it). I certainly will not be suffering the sequel and I'm glad I didn't actually buy a copy.

great book, first chapter boring as all get-out! other than that, I'd read it over and over.

It's a wonderful work of fiction. Patty uses the backdrop of pre-depression Detroit to tell her tale of Edwardian romance, crime, and murder. As I read this book I felt more and more like I was reading the work of an early American realist, very much in the vein of a Henry James or a Kate Chopin. The setting is perfect, the characters are right on, and the story engages you. Many folks who know me know that I don't usually read this kind of book, but it kept me riveted.

I read this for an assignment in college, and started the book looking at it from a paper assignment point of view. Well halfway through the book I could not put it down because I had to find out what happened! It was so interesting to see my ideas of Victorian England totally turned around. A straight-laced and closeted time it was, apparently, not. A great read!

How many times have I read this book? I couldn't tell you. There is no way I could write I review that would adequately convey how wonderful this book is. Read it, read it, read it. Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy -- they are some of the best, most vivid characters that ever ever been created. If you read this book and don't let at least one lesson rub off on you ("Don't let the sun go down on your anger!"), I would be shocked. It's truly one of the classics, and one of my all-time favorites.
