What I love about the Dark is Rising series are the different tones the books take on as their settings change. Here, Will is in Wales, and aside from the obvious way this affects the plot, it also makes the whole story somehow feel different. I can't articulate this properly, but read the whole series and you'll know what I mean. I missed the Drew kids, but Bran makes up for it. He's a wonderful character, and I like how his presence makes the Arthurian aspect of this series more explicit.

I loved reading this and discussing her ideas with Matt as I was reading them. The idea that tolerance can have negative effects is interesting, especially when it leads to allowing things we all agree are wrong to occur in our midst (like murder). The part of the book where Ayaan discusses the Dutch people's refusal to see that 'honor killings' and female circumcisions were taking place in their country simply because they wanted to be tolerant of a different cultural/religious view was a real eye-opener for me. I don't know enough about Islam to know how violent or non-violent it inherently is, in its purest form, but I do know that it's ridiculous to allow murder in the name of freedom. All in all, this was a very engaging and thought-provoking read. Themes: Islam, Africa and the Middle East, women, tolerance, violence, history, political upheaval, family, tribe/clan identity

Another clever page-turner from Kate Atkinson. I recommend reading all three in this series in order: Case Histories, One Good Turn and then this one. They all have several likeable but flawed main characters, lots of surprising coincidences, and some really great writing.

Very good in the middle, but he had some definite pacing issues.
This book was interesting for me. It was recommended by a patient that I talked books with all the time, so when I saw it at a used book store, I picked it up. The topics that the book tackles is extensive, to say the least, and I felt the diversity in one 8 person group of friends was too good to be true. But the book was extremely readable and I found myself pounding my way through it. The book is a loveletter to Charleston, SC and I do find myself wanting to visit after reading it.

From the very beginning, I was drawn into this book by its intriguing description alone. And I was not disappointed. Poison Study is a brilliant twist in the fantasy genre, with magic, poisons, and wonderfully crafted characters. Yelena is a strong, fierce heroine, who has a sharp mind and learns quickly; Valek is curiously mysterious and indifferent. A rapid, action-packed plot is propelled by heart-pounding mysteries, fight scenes, and a very subtle romance.
I never understood what the big deal was about him lying... what difference does it make? I never thought of the story being about him, but more just a completely gripping story of redemption.
This book was very sad to me. I had a hard time reading it. I think it might be my abandonment issues! It really shows a mothers love, and how many ways that can come to us.
