I read this semi-autobiographical account of Forster's homosexuality when I was twelve and it had an enormous influence on me. It moves very quickly and doesn't have the grace of A Passage to India or the humor of A Room with a View, but there is a fervency of emotion that I've never seen duplicated in the same way again.

Waiting was the first book that I read by Ha Jin. I wasn't a huge fan of this book. I read it for a book club and most of the other people at the meeting hadn't loved the book either. The title of the book is pretty appropriate since I felt like I spent most of the book waiting for something... anything. I felt no connection with the characters or their love story. Since I read this book, I have read other books by Ha Jin and enjoyed them much more.

Alan Wake would do well if it borrowed from Misery.

I am not quite sure what exactly I was expecting from the book. Other than the fact that it made me gain back some much lost respect for medical professionals, his reflections and ideas were few and far between. Nevertheless, his observational and literary powers are incredible and one can truly get a general idea of life for the oppressed peoples of South America. All in all, worth the time.

The best book I've ever read. Intensely frightening, astounding design, turbulent pacing. Everything I could ever want in a book, basically.
This is a decent book, with good art, but only so-so dialogue. Talia's use of "Beloved" seems a bit over the top. Actually Bruce and Talia's whole relationship seems over the top. The thing that saves this book is the very last page, which nudged my score from this book up a notch. All in all it's a decent story that keeps moving and isn't bad, it's just not the greatest Batman story out there.

This is a very fun book because it is different. The story keeps you going--but you need to suspend reality a bit to truly enjoy it. This would be a great summer read.
Joe Keenan's BLUE HEAVEN is absolutely, without-a-doubt the funniest novel I've ever read. Over the years, I have re-read this book several times, marveling at the expert plotting (you will never find yourself reading a Joe Keenan novel and muttering, "This could all be solved quickly if they just..." No, Keenan knows how to tie his characters into knots and then when you can figure no way out of the tangle, he masterfully shows you how to untangle things--both hilariously and logically). I love the characters he creates (they reappear in his 2nd and 3rd novels--PUTTING ON THE RITZ and MY LUCKY STAR) and i love his wordplay. Keenan left novels for more than a decade, where he made his fortunes and collected numerous EMMY Awards writing and co-producing FRASIER and DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES. BLUE HEAVEN will mostly remind you of the best FRASIER episodes (no doubt because the best episodes were all written by Keenan). Decades ago, when I was working in a bookstore, BLUE HEAVEN was my favorite hand-sell because all I had to say was "Read the first two paragraphs and tell me you're not won over and eager to read more."
This was one of my favorite books! The second book in the series, great head-start!
Enjoying the content when it brings in the social and political climate and implications. But then there are pages and pages of this 1100+ tome that tell me what the Queen Mother was wearing when she went to luncheon or danced til 3 a.m. and I don't care!
