I dislike reading short stories, but I loved this collection. I forgot how much i love and want to write like Margaret Atwood.

Don Juan is a wide-ranging story about a young man, pure and kind and handsome, who is gradually embroiled in more and more unlikely affairs, typically ending in his rescue and sudden seduction by a beautiful woman. He's caught by his mistress' jealous husband, he gets shipwrecked, watches his tutor get devoured by a starving boat of survivors, falls in love, gets attacked by pirates, serves as a queen's pleasure-boy, all in the first two or three cantos. Just ridiculous stuff, beautifully rhymed in "ottavo rima" and elegant without struggle

Mailer in the guise of journalist 'Aquarius' reports on the first moon landing. His description of the lift-off of a Saturn 5 rocket will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. They should've given him the Nobel.
I love Joseph Ellis anyway, but this is a very readable look at some of the major issues facing our founding fathers during the early republic. Ellis sets up the book by using failry well known events (the Burr/Hamilton duel, Washington's farewell address, the Dinner party where Jefferson, Madison, and Hamilton traded the location of the capitol on the Potomac for congressional support of Hamilton's financial plan, Jefferson and Adams' famous friendship, etc) to elaborate and explore major themes of slavery, the constitution, and most importantly hot to go about creating a new nation. I would recommend this to not only history students but anyone who wants a better look at the early years of our government and the people who shaped what the US became. It's funny too! Love it!

this book made me so angry and sad that i had to read it in stages. i drove my boyfriend nuts because i would read a chapter, swear loudly and vent for 15 minutes. despite the throbbing in my temples i'm glad i read this book. ia truly disturbing indictment of the bush administration and the impact their environmental policies have had (and will continue to have) on the quality of life of every citizen.

James Still's best known (but still little known in many circles) novel of life in the hills. Amazing example of the use of writing in dialect. His renderings of rural life in the depression vacillate between lamentations of the economic trials and hallelujahs of the natural beauty.

prepare to be horribly depressed. this was a consciousness raising novel written in the 1960s, i think.... in other words, it tells the story of a group of women who are "friends" who all live in the same suburban community in the late 50s and early 60s. they all have depressing and repressed lives... there is the catholic woman with 17 children who is becoming an alcoholic, there is the woman with the frigid husband, the woman with the unfaithful husband, etc. the book's point was to open eyes to the deeply unhappy lives behind a happy facade before and after the women's lib movement. thouroughly depressing, but very thought provoking. i gave it three stars instead of four because it never gave men a chance to speak for themselves but portrayed them only as oppressors, which might have been necessary given the time period...

This book reads like Walter Mitty goes on a sex vacation in Thailand. Not content with just being racist, misogynistic trash, the basic premise doesn't have enough plausibility to carry a story.
