Pretty heartbreaking but not as staggeringly genius as I've come to expect of Eggers - think he may have been too close to the subject matter. Still, I'm glad I read it, made me understand his other work a lot better, by knowing where and what he came from.

I read this book as an exercise to be thankful during this season of thanks and giving. Not for the faint. This is such a hard story to accept that I think it's possible to write it off completely. I did for a while. Regardless, it's masterful. It really is.

This book was pretty good, I'd been waiting for it for a long time but I was slightly disappointed. I didn't love it nearly as much as Sisters Red and I didnt connect to Gretchen as much as I did to Rosie and Samuel was no Silas but I'm going to stop comparing the two. Sweetly was interesting enough but there were some problems I had. I felt like Samuel was almost too aloof and then he was like totally into Gretchen. Honestly, I didn't really see what Gretchen saw in him. Also the character Ansel fell flat to me, he didn't really have a personality and it wasn't really explained just why he fell for Sophia, the chocolatier and Sophia was a character I couldn't figure out and what her motivations were kept me guessing to the very end. All in all not a bad book. 3.5 stars.

Cute little book and surprisingly modern, despite having been written in the 1930s. And you have to love a book with a character named Topaz in it! I wavered between rating this a 3 and a 4. There were times I just loved the book, and even a few times I laughed out loud, but then I found other parts definitely lagged and were hard to get through. Overall, though, a fun read with an engaging narrator.

I am ambivalent about this book. On one hand, I was constantly surprised and pleased by Ms. Kincaid's original use of language. I intend to reread it especially to keep a list of some of the more rewarding phrases. On the other, I found the protagonist manipulative, with dark ulterior impulses that made me distrust her. Far from finding her honest, I found her cunning and insidious. I felt she might easily murder someone and relate it/blame it on her hardships in her native island country. I would never trust this character with any children. In that, the book rang untrue. We were told many times that the children liked her, but never a word led us to believe she regarded them as anything but a means to a job. I also had no connection to her motivation, which seemed sinister. She seemed to like her employer one moment, and resent her - really resent her - the next. I would understand a bit of that if it was triggered by something, but it was unpredictable, and not in a good way. It left me feeling that the author wanted to show inner struggle, but was inconsistent about it. I also disliked the sex scenes, which felt gratuitous. And the friend was just a pleasure seeking zombie. I didn't "get" her at all. I give it a D- on plot, a B+ in clever language use. I wish I could rate the character likability. I'd give it the lowest possible rating on that. Read this for original use of language. For anyone else, do yourself a favor and skip this one.

Finally we get to the end of this incredible series. It sits beside His Dark Materials, HP, and Bartimaeus as the best children's fantasy series that I've ever read. I need to include the Chronicles of Prydain in there too. So I just finished it and it definitely lived up to my expectations. Maybe a little violent and bloody for the under 12 set, but awesome.
