This is my favorite book in the Twelve Houses series. In fact, there are a couple of books in this series that I did not even make it through, but this is the second time I've read "The Thirteenth House." It's Kirra, the main character, that makes it so interesting. She is one of three women characters to make it on the cover of a book in this series, and she is the only one who is not a fighter. She likes to wear dresses and go to parties, well-versed in social politics. How many fantasy characters are known for their sunny disposition? I don't usually like to use the word girly, but sometimes it feels like an author has to keep her main character from being too feminine in order to be taken seriously. But what is good about Kirra is that feminine does not mean powerless or lacking substance. She has the ability to shapeshift, which is a fascinating power. It gives her freedom, but at the same time she doubts her own shifting identity. A part of this story, beyond the political intrigue, is about Kirra figuring out what defines her. And being girly doesn't keep her from taking action. I picked up this book again because I had been talking with my sister about how frustrated she is with the cliche of the love triangle found especially in YA fantasy right now, where the heroine has to choose between the charming, brooding and very handsome superhero and then the nice-guy best friend. While Kirra finds herself in that same situation, it breaks with the usual proceedings, and it's a hard lesson for Kirra to learn.
