I love Mitch Rapp. This character reminds me of Jack Bower. Good plot and as usual well written.

Pilgrim is as essential as the Bible to me. I have read and re-read this book many times since discovering Dillard.

3 1/2 stars Laurann Dohner's New Species = Lora Leigh's Breeds with better editing (not sure if that's a compliment, as that isn't hard to accomplish, LOL)

3.5 stars When a mysterious mute, wood carver visits Maddie's village, she can't help but be drawn to him. Getting his attention is going to be harder than Maddie realizes. After her village has given up on him and deemed him an idiot, Maddie can't help herself and she wants to know more about him. Not one for words, this piercing green eyed, angst stranger isn't willing to give away his secrets. After a turn of events and an attack from an evil shadow like creature, Carver, as Maddie calls him, ends up being taking care of by her mother. During his recovery Carver begins to slowly open up to Maddie about what he is, and the danger she and her village are in. Maddie and Carver aren't in-depth characters, but with the story reading more like a folklore, I felt I got to know them enough to understand them and the choices they make. Both are similar, as both are like outsiders to those around them. Maddie is one of the few younger people who live in small remote village and Carver has a dark secret that keeps him from getting close to anyone. It wasn't hard to see why these two felt drawn to each other. I liked seeing how the two of them became closer and learned to trust each other. I also like that the werewolf isn't like traditional wolves, but is more of shadow creature that lurks in the darkest places of the night during the full moon, which makes this creature dark and erie. What I enjoyed most about Clare Dunkle's By These Ten Books is the unique werewolf mythology and it's beautiful setting. Set in medieval Scotland among it's highlands gives an air of mystery and intrigue to the book. Truthfully, the setting and lore are what made me want to read the book, and kept my interest through out the story. These key elements play just as big of a role in the story as the characters do, and really set the tone for the book. I enjoyed this fascinating spin on werewolf mythology and I recommend picking it up. It's a good read. You can read our interview with Clare here

I'm not sure why I find it necessary to keep trying to like Nicholas Sparks novels. About 18 months ago I read about 5 of them. The Last Song was really pretty decent, but other than that I was not impressed. His novels tend to be pretty formulaic, and it's not a super compelling formula, in my opinion. Anyhow, I tried again with this, and it really wasn't too bad. It was a little different than his typical story line (also the reason I almost liked Last Song) but it felt like I was reading the movie Sleeping With the Enemy, which I have not seen since it came out in, what, the early 90s? The very, very ending surprised me, and I'm not so sure it was a good surprise. It felt a little weird and out of place. Nice concept, I guess, but it just didn't work for me. A strong 2.5 rating on this one from me. I imagine that if you actually like Sparks books to begin with, this would be a great addition to your collection.
I enjoyed reading this mother's account of her family's path of loving and living for the Lord. The writing is extremely simple and straightforward and maybe included a few too many rough details about the Hamiltons' lives before they were Christians. But I loved hearing about her heart for God and her children and also hearing about so many facts of life in Kaua'i before we ever got here! We already are familiar with so many of the names she mentions - not just of places, but of surfers and Kauaian Christians. It is truly a small island!
Raskin's inability to be faithful to any one woman causes him to adopt the inventor of instant ramen (Momofuku Ando) as his higher power. He writes letters to Ando and learns from Ando's life story as part of his recovery. Lots of Japanese food, manga, and samurai movie references. The book is going to be difficult if you do not find the author sympathetic (or at least pathetic and interesting). The combination of his writing, sense of humor, and genuine unhappiness and self loathing was enough to overcome most of the personal issues I had with Raskin's behavior. It is not for everyone, but for the right person, it is a pretty terrific book.
I loved the start of this book and it really hooked me back in at the end - I loved how Door took care of things and Richard's decision at the end of the novel but somewhere in the middle I kept putting the book down and losing interest. I loved the idea of an underground London, the floating market, Door, Hunter and the rest of the characters - in fact, I wish I knew more about them! I'd like to know how your life force can be stored separately, why the people of Atlantis deserved to be washed under the sea, what happened to people taken when crossing over the bridge and more. Might enjoy a sequel to this book to see how Door and Richard were able to bring the London underground together.

much more melancholy than prior works: reads like an author channeling Bolivar, reflecting upon the end of his days and meaning of life. reading it at age 24, it feels depressing, as though I'm going to live between now and 80 and only have sad memories to account for it. perhaps a book to read when one gets a few more years down.

This book was a central part of my thesis on the relationship between 18th-century architecture and etiquette practices. Basically, "petites maisons" were small pleasure houses often used for illicit affairs by noble persons, but their architectural design reflected proper etiquette which means that their infamous reputation is inaccurate. The descriptions are beautiful, and the book is very, very short. I recommend reading it in French only if you are familiar with many architectural terms.
